About The Position

General Motors is hiring an early-career / new graduate Software Verification Engineer for its Autonomous Vehicles (AV) Software Organization. The organization develops advanced driver assistance and autonomous vehicle features for next-generation vehicles. The engineer will help define, implement, and optimize system testing to support the quality, safety, and reliability of ADAS platform software. The role supports software verification across hardware-in-the-loop (HIL), software-in-the-loop (SIL), and vehicle-in-the-loop (VIL) environments. It includes running and analyzing system and integration tests, helping debug platform issues, improving test environments and automation, and contributing to safety and regulatory test alignment. The engineer will collaborate with software infrastructure, application, and hardware teams and take part in failure analysis and continuous improvement. This role is intended for candidates who recently completed, or will complete by August 2026, a relevant degree. It is categorized as hybrid, with the selected candidate expected to report to a specific location at least three times a week, or at another frequency set by their manager. Occasional travel between Milford Proving Ground, GM Global Technical Center in Warren, and/or other GM sites may be required. The work may involve lab, bench, and vehicle environments. A valid driver’s license and ability to operate test vehicles may be required for certain validation activities.

  • Recently completed, or will complete by August 2026, a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Experience with at least one programming language such as Python, C, or C++, through coursework, internships, research, or personal projects.
  • Basic understanding of software testing concepts such as test cases, regression testing, and test automation.
  • Familiarity with Linux development environments through classwork, labs, internships, or projects.
  • Exposure to vehicle or networked systems, including basic knowledge of CAN or Ethernet.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills and ability to work well on cross-functional teams.

Nice To Haves

  • Hands-on experience with HIL/SIL/VIL test environments, simulation benches, or lab-based embedded test setups.
  • Experience developing test automation using Python or similar scripting languages; familiarity with Robot Framework, CAPL, or Vehicle Spy.
  • Exposure to embedded Linux or QNX-based systems and/or real-time operating systems (RTOS); familiarity with ROS in robotics or autonomy projects is a plus.
  • Experience with network and vehicle debugging tools such as Wireshark, CANoe/CANalyzer, INCA, or similar instrumentation platforms.
  • Basic understanding of automotive communication protocols and diagnostics, such as CAN, Ethernet, SOME/IP, DDS, and UDS/ISO 14229.
  • Familiarity with functional safety and safety-of-the-intended-functionality (SOTIF) concepts or standards, such as ISO 26262 or SOTIF, gained through coursework or projects.
  • Internship, research, or project experience in automotive, robotics, autonomy, or real-time systems.

Responsibilities

  • Support the design, implementation, and execution of software verification for the AV/ADAS platform across HIL, SIL, and VIL environments.
  • Run and monitor system and integration tests, analyze diagnostics from a full-vehicle perspective, and help triage and debug AV Platform software issues.
  • Assist in building, maintaining, and improving test environments and automation frameworks to increase coverage, reliability, and execution speed.
  • Help ensure tests align with relevant safety and regulatory standards, including ISO 26262, SOTIF, FMVSS 111, and FMVSS 127, and contribute to improving test metrics and coverage.
  • Collaborate with Software Infrastructure, application, and Hardware teams to reproduce issues, gather logs, and support root-cause analysis for Linux/QNX-based AV Platform software.
  • Participate in failure analysis activities, including FMEA, root-cause investigations using Ishikawa/Fishbone analysis, and A-B-A testing; document findings clearly and systematically.
  • Improve test cases, tooling, and processes by incorporating feedback from senior engineers and cross-functional partners.
