Software Multi-Modal UX Output Designer

Lenovo•Morrisville, NC

About The Position

Design and develop intuitive, multisensory communication experiences for ambient AI systems that extend beyond traditional screens. The role shapes how AI communicates through spatial audio, haptics, ambient lighting, and visual cues to create natural, emotionally resonant interactions. The position combines sensory design expertise, technical prototyping skills, and a human-centered approach to delivering meaningful feedback while minimizing cognitive load and unnecessary interruptions.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of experience designing multisensory experiences, haptic systems, spatial audio interactions, ambient user experiences, or related disciplines.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Interaction Design, Industrial Design, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Sound Design, or a related field; equivalent experience may be considered.

Nice To Haves

  • Portfolio demonstrating multisensory prototypes, audio-haptic integration, ambient feedback systems, or comparable interactive experiences.
  • Proven experience collaborating with cross-functional teams in software and hardware development environments.
  • Expertise in simulation and prototyping software capable of driving multichannel output hardware.
  • Strong understanding of how sound, touch, and light influence human perception, emotion, and cognitive focus.
  • Hands-on experience with physical hardware rigs, audio synthesis software, and tactile controllers.
  • Ability to develop and evaluate sensory interactions that balance subtlety, clarity, and appropriate urgency.
  • Background in sound design, music production, or industrial design with a focus on haptic integration.
  • Experience with physical computing platforms and hardware-based experience prototyping.
  • Familiarity with spatial audio technologies, spatial rendering engines, and immersive audio applications.
  • Knowledge of psychoacoustics, waveform design, tactile frequency tuning, and sensory feedback optimization.
  • Understanding of neuro-ergonomics, sensory perception psychology, or related human factors disciplines.
  • Experience conducting user research focused on emotional response, cognitive load, attention, and sensory perception.
  • Ability to develop distinctive sonic and tactile design languages for consumer technology and ambient AI ecosystems.

Responsibilities

  • Design integrated sensory feedback systems combining spatial audio, advanced haptics, ambient lighting, and visual cues to communicate system status and activity.
  • Establish interaction patterns for alerts, confirmations, and ambient information that communicate effectively without requiring visual attention.
  • Define tactile feedback characteristics, sonic identity, and interaction choreography to create intuitive, organic, and satisfying experiences.
  • Develop calm, peripheral awareness models that keep users informed of AI operations while minimizing cognitive overload and notification fatigue.
  • Build experiential rigs and functional prototypes integrating soundscapes, haptic actuators, and environmental lighting to evaluate sensory interactions.
  • Design and conduct qualitative and quantitative studies to assess cognitive load, emotional response, usability, and sensory noticeability thresholds.
  • Partner with software and hardware engineering teams to translate sensory concepts into feasible, integrated experiences.
  • Use audio synthesis, simulation, and prototyping tools to develop and validate multisensory systems across multichannel output hardware.
