About The Position

As a Software Manufacturing Test Engineer, you will build, scale, and maintain software that drives manufacturing test systems. The role focuses on developing production software that tests complex hardware, integrates with laboratory instrumentation and data acquisition systems, and manages station-generated data. You will write reliable production code in Python and C# for Linux/Unix environments, ideally using NixOS, and derive software test requirements from hardware schematics and system specifications. You will author automated test sequences and deploy complete software suites to factory test racks. You will work with development and firmware engineers to refine test coverage as product designs evolve, resolve hardware-software integration failures on the production floor, and support deterministic deployments across the manufacturing line. The role includes PLC-integrated station control, hardware-free simulation and regression environments, integration with test equipment and embedded communication protocols, and automation across PCBA-level functional testing through full-system and Environmental Stress Screening checkouts. You will also support traceability, operator usability, root-cause analysis, and ongoing improvements to test coverage and cycle time.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 3 years of relevant industry experience as a Software Manufacturing Test Engineer or in an equivalent role focused on software development for hardware test automation, lab automation, or manufacturing environments.
  • Strong proficiency writing production code in Python for test automation, device control, and data handling.
  • Working knowledge of C# (.NET) for test applications, operator interfaces, or system services.
  • Strong Linux/Unix systems knowledge, including terminal use, shell scripting, SSH, and network configuration and debugging.
  • Hands-on experience interfacing test suites with UART, CAN, and RS-485/RS-232 protocols.
  • Familiarity with software control of standard test equipment, including programmable power supplies, DMMs, oscilloscopes, electronic loads, and DAQ devices.
  • Strong root-cause analysis skills for diagnosing hardware-software boundary issues using log files, terminal outputs, and basic bench tools.
  • Experience integrating test platforms with Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) and database backends.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills for collaboration with hardware, software, and operations teams.
  • Eligible to obtain and maintain an active U.S. Secret security clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Nix and NixOS for declarative test-environment management and deployment.
  • C programming knowledge.
  • Familiarity with SQL for direct database queries and test-record validation.
  • Basic familiarity with HTML/CSS for internal test-run reports or local dashboard views.
  • Experience working with contract manufacturers on software test execution for PCBA and electronic assemblies.
  • Familiarity with Ethernet, USB, PCIe, and SPI/I2C hardware protocols.
  • Experience developing test solutions for aerospace, defense, or automotive hardware under environmental stress conditions such as thermal, vibration, or burn-in.
  • Active U.S. Secret or Top Secret security clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Own software manufacturing test activities in production, including station uptime, operator usability, and factory throughput.
  • Develop and maintain PLC-integrated station control software using Modbus TCP, including rig actuation, interlocks, sensor acquisition, and maintenance of the PLC tag/address index and its validation tooling.
  • Build hardware-free simulation environments, including containerized station images, virtual CAN replay, and device simulators, to support development and regression testing without occupying hardware.
  • Design, build, and maintain production software manufacturing test suites primarily in Python and C# for hardware control, test sequencing, instrument automation, test executives, operator interfaces, and background services.
  • Integrate test applications with sensors, DAQs, programmable power supplies, electronic loads, and vehicle compute hardware.
  • Implement low-level hardware communication using UART, CAN, and RS-485/RS-232 to command, flash, and validate devices under test.
  • Deploy, configure, and debug test systems on Linux/Unix using command-line tools, SSH, and network debugging utilities.
  • Use Nix and NixOS to manage reproducible test environments and prevent dependency drift between development benches and production stations.
  • Collaborate with hardware and firmware engineers during NPI to define test requirements, coverage, APIs, and pass/fail limits.
  • Automate test execution across assembly levels, from PCBA-level functional test through full-system and Environmental Stress Screening checkouts.
  • Provide hands-on troubleshooting and root-cause analysis for electrical, firmware, and software test issues found on the production line.
  • Log parametric test data and integrate stations with database systems and Manufacturing Execution Systems to maintain hardware traceability.
  • Develop operator interfaces, error-handling mechanisms, and troubleshooting logs to assist technicians during hardware failures.
  • Support continuous improvement to optimize test sequences, reduce cycle times, and increase test coverage without sacrificing quality.
