About The Position

The Order Fulfillment Software Factory delivers GM’s end-to-end software for two value streams: Source to Deliver (purchasing, supplier management, supply chain, and logistics) and Order to Deliver (vehicle sales, configuration, scheduling, and delivery). The factory is advancing GM’s SaaS First, Cloud First, and AI First direction, working closely with other GM IT teams and factories. This is a player-coach role for a Software Engineering Manager who codes, leading a team of approximately 6–12 engineers. The manager will be the team’s technical anchor, responsible for scoping problems, designing systems, and shipping code alongside their team. A key focus will be making agentic AI coding the default method for building, testing, and operating software. The role requires approximately 30–40% hands-on coding, system design, prototyping, and daily work with AI coding agents. The manager will set the team’s technical direction and be accountable for its delivery, quality, and growth.

  • Make AI coding agents part of everyday work across planning, implementation, testing, code review, refactoring, documentation, and operations.
  • Build and maintain the team’s agent setup, including repository-level instructions, reusable prompts, tool integrations, and CI pipelines for automated reviews and testing.
  • Set guardrails for agent-generated code to ensure safety, including test coverage, human-review standards, sandboxing, and data handling.
  • Use agents to modernize legacy systems, such as generating test harnesses and running automated migrations.
  • Track impact through measures like cycle time, change-failure rate, and defect escape rate.
  • Share best practices with peer teams and help establish factory-wide practices.
  • Hire engineers and make staffing decisions to build the right talent mix.
  • Hold regular one-on-ones and career conversations with engineers.
