About The Position

Mashgin is seeking an Engineering Manager who excels as a builder, capable of noticing patterns for better design, abstractions, and technical direction, while also being able to ship features when needed. This role is responsible for integrations that allow Mashgin's kiosks to function as point-of-sale devices, encompassing the software on the kiosks, the backend services, and customer-facing features. The manager will collaborate with founders on product decisions, set technical direction, and be accountable for the quality of work and team growth. A significant portion of time (one-third to half) will be hands-on coding. Mashgin maintains a flat organizational structure with the title 'Member of Technical Staff' for all engineers, emphasizing that management involves guiding a team's direction, hiring, and growth while remaining an active builder.

  • B.S. or higher in Computer Science, or equivalent work experience.
  • Excellent knowledge of at least one of the following languages: Python, Node.js, C++, Go, Java.
  • Comfortable learning new languages, libraries, and frameworks as needed.
  • Experience building production-ready code used regularly by a large user base.

  • Remain hands-on by designing, writing, and reviewing code across the entire stack, with a focus on code across the full stack.
  • Translate ambiguous product goals into executable technical plans for the team with minimal supervision.
  • Collaborate with a small interdisciplinary team (hardware, software, design) on products for a fleet of physical kiosks operating in the field.
  • Determine and justify what needs to be rebuilt for scalability versus what can remain as is.
  • Share production ownership and on-call responsibilities with the team.
