Software Engineering Manager, Network Security

AnthropicSan Francisco, NY

About The Position

Anthropic is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead its Network Security team. This team is responsible for securing Anthropic's networks across cloud providers and bare-metal AI data centers, including egress and ingress controls, network segmentation, private connectivity, and encryption in transit. The role involves designing, building, and maintaining these controls, as well as writing software for their deployment, enforcement, and monitoring. The team's work is critical for protecting model weights, customer data, and internal assets. As Anthropic expands its data center sites and cloud regions, this team will grow, and the Engineering Manager will be responsible for setting the team's charter, practices, and priorities. This includes partnering with infrastructure networking, cluster, and data center teams to ensure security is integrated into network designs from the outset, aiming for secure-by-default networking that enables research and product teams to operate efficiently without compromising security.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of front-line management experience.
  • Low ego, high empathy; experience building diverse teams with former reports willing to work for them again.
  • Experience managing infrastructure or security engineering teams, including hiring, developing, and managing senior and staff engineers.
  • Proven track record of growing engineers into staff or lead roles, and making difficult personnel decisions when coaching is ineffective.
  • Experience maintaining team cohesion and delivery through organizational changes (reorgs, charter shifts, leadership turnover).
  • Experience owning a security or infrastructure domain end-to-end, including setting multi-year strategy, delivering long-term cross-organizational projects with minimal direction, and reporting to executives on risks and tradeoffs.
  • Experience scaling a team and its systems through hypergrowth.
  • Hands-on network security engineering experience in cloud and/or on-prem environments (VPC design, interconnects, private service connectivity, cloud firewall policy, egress control, physical segmentation, out-of-band/management-plane security).
  • Experience with threat modeling and risk assessment for networked systems, with the ability to discern effective controls.
  • Experience securing Kubernetes networking at scale or working in high-assurance environments requiring evidenced controls.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience building or rebuilding a hiring loop and maintaining hiring bar during rapid headcount growth.
  • Exposure to large-scale distributed training and its network demands.
  • Experience solving end-to-end networking problems directly with internal users, cloud account teams, and hardware/colo vendors.
  • Experience taking infrastructure from initial concept to maturity, including building the first version and hardening it into a reliable production system.
  • Pragmatic and steady approach, balancing the need to unblock research/product with maintaining a clean architecture.
  • Clear and persuasive communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Familiarity with AI security and safety concepts.

Responsibilities

  • Own the network security roadmap, including threat modeling from the management plane through Kubernetes and cloud interconnects, and delivering on defined objectives.
  • Design and implement default-deny ingress and egress, segmentation between research, training, and production environments, private connectivity, and mTLS/service identity across all environments.
  • Ship secure-by-default primitives that ensure new clusters, VPCs, and data center links inherit appropriate security boundaries.
  • Collaborate with networking, cluster, and data center teams during the design phase to ensure network topology, routing, and firewall decisions align with security invariants.
  • Develop visibility into network traffic and boundary drift, including detection for exfiltration paths and automated remediation where feasible.
  • Own the network security evidence to demonstrate adherence to security goals and compliance requirements.
  • Hire, grow, and retain senior security software engineers, manage their career development, and establish scalable team practices.

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation
  • Optional equity donation matching
  • Generous vacation
  • Parental leave
  • Flexible working hours
  • Visa sponsorship
