Spring 2027 Internship: Software Engineering

Skyband Systems•Kirkland, WA
•$50•Onsite

About The Position

Skyband Systems has developed the M100, a certified avionics system designed to counteract GPS jamming and spoofing, ensuring safety and operational reliability in aviation. The M100 integrates Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite signals with inertial sensing to provide pilots with a reliable, GPS-independent position source. The company is a fast-paced, VC-backed team in Kirkland, WA, comprised of engineers who previously scaled Starlink Aviation at SpaceX. They are involved in the entire product lifecycle, including designing, building, testing, and flying their own hardware in their own aircraft. Team members have significant ownership over product areas and problem spaces.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor’s or master’s program in computer science, computer engineering, mathematics, electrical engineering, aerospace engineering, or a related field.
  • 3+ months of software engineering experience from internships, research, student project teams, or substantial personal projects.
  • Comfortable writing and debugging software in at least one programming language (C++, Rust, and Python are used).
  • Familiarity with source control, automated testing, and fundamental software engineering practices.
  • Authorized to work in the United States.
  • Full-time, onsite in Kirkland, WA for a minimum of 12 consecutive weeks beginning January 2027.
  • Able to lift up to 25 lbs.
  • Able to work in lab and hangar environments.
  • Occasional travel for aircraft integration and flight test may be required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience building and testing a significant software project outside of the classroom, with the ability to explain design decisions and tradeoffs.
  • Experience with modern C++, Rust, and Python.
  • Familiarity with Linux, embedded systems, concurrency, networking, or hardware interfaces.
  • Experience with simulation, numerical methods, signal processing, estimation, or analysis of real-world sensor data.
  • Experience building automated test systems, hardware-in-the-loop tests, or software that interacts with physical hardware.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD, build systems, cloud infrastructure, telemetry, or production observability.
  • Interest in aviation, navigation, GNSS, inertial sensing, or safety-critical systems.
  • Clear written communication skills and the discipline to document assumptions, tests, results, and unresolved problems.

Responsibilities

  • Write, test, and ship production software for the M100 and associated development, testing, and operational systems.
  • Develop embedded and real-time software for sensor processing, system health monitoring, navigation, and aircraft interfaces.
  • Build simulators, replay tools, and data-analysis software to translate lab and flight data into actionable engineering decisions.
  • Expand automated unit, integration, and hardware-in-the-loop testing, including fault injection and control of physical hardware.
  • Debug issues across software, Linux, networks, electronics, test equipment, and aircraft installations.
  • Improve build, CI, release, and observability tooling to ensure software changes are repeatable and traceable.
  • Support system qualification and flight testing, and document designs and results to meet certification standards.

Benefits

  • $50.00/hour
  • $2500 relocation bonus
  • Paid holidays based on company holiday schedule
  • Direct mentorship from engineers who have shipped flight software at scale
