About The Position

The Senior Software Engineer will lead the delivery of scoped features and models through collaborative teams, ensuring alignment with platform and business objectives. This role involves designing, developing, testing, and maintaining high-quality software solutions using multiple programming languages and modern development practices. The position requires integrating AI/ML components, driving continuous improvement, and supporting operational excellence. The engineer will engage stakeholders to translate complex problems into technical requirements, provide technical leadership, and promote innovation while maintaining system reliability and performance in a fast-paced environment. The Walmart Item Orchestrator team comprises skilled engineers dedicated to building a high-performance platform managing millions of queries per second across billions of items. Utilizing technologies like Java, Rust, Kafka, Cassandra, and Kubernetes, the team develops scalable, low-latency systems. Focused on collaboration and technical excellence, members deliver resilient, efficient features aligned with Walmart’s platform and business objectives. The team emphasizes continuous improvement through iterative development, knowledge sharing, and best practices to ensure reliable, high-quality software that meets demanding performance standards.

Requirements

  • Extensive experience in software development with proficiency in Java or RxJava, Spring Boot, Kafka, and Cassandra (or similar platforms).
  • Strong expertise in object-oriented programming, code review, debugging, and documentation-based coding practices.
  • Proven ability to deliver scoped features and models through collaborative, iterative development and continuous integration processes.
  • Experience integrating AI/ML components and leveraging generative AI tools to enhance software solutions.
  • Demonstrated skills in designing scalable, secure, and maintainable systems aligned with business objectives.
  • Ability to translate complex business problems into actionable technical requirements and measurable outcomes.
  • Commitment to engineering excellence, continuous improvement, and effective cross-team collaboration.
  • Experience working on high throughput, scalable microservices.
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 3 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.
  • OR 5 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.

Nice To Haves

  • 5+ years of full-time experience as a Java backend engineer.
  • Hands-on experience working in a large-scale systems environment.
  • Rust experience strongly preferred.
  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Computer Information Systems, Software Engineering, or related area and 1 year's experience in software engineering or related area.
  • Background in creating inclusive digital experiences, demonstrating knowledge in implementing Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standards, assistive technologies, and integrating digital accessibility seamlessly.
  • Knowledge of accessibility best practices and joining in creating accessible products and services following Walmart’s accessibility standards and guidelines for supporting an inclusive culture.

Responsibilities

  • Own scoped feature and model delivery through collaborative engineering teams, ensuring alignment with platform and system objectives.
  • Write clean, efficient, and reliable code across multiple languages, driving full software development lifecycle including CI/CD and automated testing.
  • Integrate AI/ML components and leverage GenAI tools to enhance software intelligence and development velocity.
  • Participate in solution design, conduct code reviews, and ensure scalable, secure, and maintainable software systems.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to translate business needs into technical requirements and measurable outcomes.
  • Monitor application performance, support defect management, and promote continuous improvement and innovation.
  • Mentor peers, share knowledge, and contribute to engineering excellence and team growth.
