Software Engineer - Workforce Insights

CVS Health•Washington, NV
•$83,430 - $222,480

About The Position

Workforce Insights is a governed technology platform supporting the HR Insights Organizational Health dashboard, its drill-down experiences, and future business intelligence products. It combines BigQuery data models and governed views, Airflow pipelines on Cloud Composer, GitHub Actions deployments, and a semantic layer in Apache Superset. The Software Engineer develops and operates software across the workforce analytics product, including Python services and automation, SQL transformations, workflow code, deployment tooling, and BI integrations. The role partners with data and HR specialists to turn requirements into maintainable code, tests, and releases. Domain knowledge across the analytics stack is developed with support from experienced teammates. The position is full-time, with 40 anticipated weekly hours. The typical pay range is $83,430.00–$222,480.00, and the position may also be eligible for a CVS Health bonus, commission, or short-term incentive program. The role is eligible for medical, dental, and vision coverage, paid time off, retirement savings options, wellness programs, and other resources, based on eligibility.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of professional software development experience, or equivalent experience building and supporting production software.
  • At least 3 years of experience with Python or a comparable general-purpose language, including writing readable, maintainable code and automated tests.
  • At least 3 years of experience building or integrating APIs, services, data workflows, or other production systems, with the ability to reason about interfaces and failure modes.
  • At least 3 years of experience working across application code, data transformations, and operational tooling as product needs require.
  • At least 2 years of advanced SQL experience, preferably in BigQuery, including scripting, partitioning, clustering, materialized views, query optimization, and cost awareness.
  • At least 2 years of experience with Kimball dimensional modeling, including grain, conformed dimensions, slowly changing dimensions, bridge tables, factless facts, and fact additivity.
  • At least 2 years of production experience with Airflow or Cloud Composer and Python for ETL, automation, data quality, and troubleshooting.
  • At least 2 years of hands-on experience with cloud data platforms; GCP is strongly preferred, with working knowledge of BigQuery, Cloud Storage, IAM, service accounts, Secret Manager, and related security concepts.
  • At least 1 year of experience with an enterprise semantic or BI layer such as Superset, ThoughtSpot, Looker, Tableau, Power BI, or similar, including governed metrics and row-level security.
  • At least 1 year of experience with Git, code review, and CI/CD practices, preferably GitHub Actions across multiple environments.
  • At least 1 year of experience tracing data or metric discrepancies to root cause and explaining findings to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Data Science, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Python data applications, SQL transformation frameworks, Airflow, or Cloud Composer.
  • Experience with BigQuery, GCP services, containerized deployments, or GitHub Actions.
  • Experience with BI or semantic-layer integrations such as Superset, ThoughtSpot, Looker, or Power BI.
  • HR or people-analytics knowledge, including Workday data, workforce metrics, or organizational hierarchies.
  • Experience handling sensitive employee data, access controls, policy tags, or small-cell suppression.
  • REST API automation; exposure to Superset on GKE, Celery, Redis, or OAuth.
  • Experience maintaining open-source software used by a team, such as tracking releases and vulnerabilities, planning upgrades, managing customizations, or contributing changes upstream.
  • Google Cloud Professional Data Engineer certification.
  • Master’s degree in a relevant technical or analytical discipline.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, test, and maintain software features across Python, SQL, and workflow code, following team architecture and coding standards.
  • Translate product and operational requirements into technical tasks and collaborate with data engineers, analysts, and HR partners on expected behavior and acceptance criteria.
  • Participate in code reviews, improve existing code, and write automated tests for business logic, data contracts, and integrations.
  • Build and maintain BigQuery transformations and models according to conventions for grain, keys, history, and query efficiency.
  • Implement approved workforce metric definitions in SQL and application or BI integrations, keeping the logic understandable and testable.
  • Preserve metric behavior when changing data models or interfaces, reconcile outputs to agreed reference numbers, and investigate discrepancies with metric owners.
  • Document changes that affect reported numbers and obtain definition-owner approval before release.
  • Contribute to Superset datasets and dashboard integrations, and support evaluation of APIs, caching, SSO, and scheduled-report behavior.
  • Follow access-control, BigQuery policy-tag, BI row-level security, and small-cell suppression patterns in code and data products.
  • Keep PII out of tables, logs, and outputs where it does not belong, and consult data owners when requirements are unclear.
  • Add or run security, data-quality, and regression tests with senior engineers and governance partners before release.
  • Develop and maintain Airflow workflows, Python automation, SQL assets, and deployment-related code.
  • Use the established GitHub Actions release process across dev, pdev, and prod, including environment placeholders, and follow IAM and service-account controls.
  • Diagnose defects using logs, tests, and system behavior; contribute fixes, monitoring, and operational documentation; and promptly escalate production risks.
  • Support safe releases through review, validation, rollback, and incident processes.
  • Keep technical documentation current for changed components, including interfaces, data lineage, and operational procedures.
  • Help modernize the Workforce Insights stack through incremental refactoring, migration validation, and retirement of legacy components under the team's change process.
  • Help maintain the Apache Superset deployment and integrations by tracking upstream releases and security advisories, assessing upgrades, validating compatibility, and maintaining supportable configuration or extensions.
  • Prefer configuration and extension points over long-lived private forks; document necessary patches and, where appropriate, work with the team to contribute fixes or improvements upstream.
  • Share context with teammates and explain technical tradeoffs and metric behavior to technical and non-technical partners.
