About The Position

FreeWheel, a Comcast company, is hiring a Software Engineer for its Software Engineering for Audience and Measurement (SEAM) team. The team builds audience, identity, and measurement services, including identity resolution, audience segmentation, and privacy-preserving measurement solutions. This hands-on individual contributor role delivers software, automation, analytics, and cloud-optimization solutions that connect engineering performance with financial outcomes and support scalable audience, identity, measurement, decisioning, and activation platforms. The position is based in Chicago, Illinois, and requires onsite work two days per week. The engineer partners with Engineering, Finance, Product, Architecture, Data, Platform, and SRE. The work focuses on improving cost visibility, infrastructure efficiency, developer productivity, operational reliability, and the return on technology investments. The role reports to the Senior Manager of Optimization. The position involves building software, data pipelines, dashboards, and automation for measuring cloud spend and engineering performance; analyzing workloads and financial data to identify optimization opportunities; and implementing AI- and analytics-enabled solutions. It also contributes to scalable and secure services, integrations between telemetry and financial data, capacity planning, testing, production support, stakeholder communications, and ongoing operational improvement. The role requires regular, consistent, and punctual attendance and the ability to work nights and weekends on variable schedules as necessary.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, data science, finance, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience; the posting also notes that a bachelor's degree is preferred and that coursework, experience, or extensive related professional experience may be considered.
  • Typically, 3+ years of hands-on software engineering experience using a language such as Python, Go, Java, JavaScript/Node.js, Rust, or Scala.
  • Experience with at least one major cloud provider—AWS, Azure, GCP, or OCI—and working knowledge of cloud billing, resource tagging, usage metrics, or cost-management concepts.
  • Working knowledge of LLM/RAG/MCP and Agentic AI.
  • Working knowledge of CI/CD and infrastructure-as-code tools such as GitHub Actions, Jenkins, or Terraform, or equivalent technologies.
  • Experience with microservices, containers, and orchestration platforms such as Docker, Kubernetes, EKS, or OKE.
  • Strong SQL skills and exposure to data and analytics platforms such as Snowflake, Databricks, Spark, Presto, EMR, PostgreSQL, or Aerospike.
  • Experience building dashboards, automated reporting, data pipelines, or observability solutions using tools such as Datadog, Prometheus, ELK, Grafana, or business intelligence platforms.
  • Ability to analyze technical and financial data, quantify tradeoffs, debug scoped issues, and turn findings into practical engineering actions.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills, including the ability to work with Engineering, Finance, Product, Architecture, Data, Platform, SRE, compliance, and end users.
  • Ability to contribute in a fast-paced agile environment while balancing delivery, reliability, security, cost, and maintainability.
  • Ability to work nights and weekends on variable schedules as necessary.
  • Regular, consistent, and punctual attendance.

Nice To Haves

  • Adtech or advertising industry experience.
  • Experience with FinOps, cloud cost optimization, forecasting, AI-assisted engineering, or advertising and audience platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain software, data pipelines, dashboards, and automation to measure cloud spend, infrastructure utilization, cost per transaction or activation, capacity, reliability, and engineering productivity.
  • Work with the Manager and Finance stakeholders to turn budgets, forecasts, unit economics, and business cases into engineering requirements and measurable optimization initiatives.
  • Analyze cloud, platform, and data workloads to identify cost anomalies, inefficient resource use, redundant services, and opportunities to optimize workload placement, storage, compute, and data movement.
  • Implement AI- and analytics-enabled solutions to automate operational work, improve forecasting and anomaly detection, accelerate delivery, and support engineering and financial decisions.
  • Contribute to the design and delivery of scalable, available, secure, and maintainable services using cloud-native patterns, infrastructure as code, CI/CD, automated testing, and observability.
  • Work with Architecture, Platform, Data, SRE, and product engineering teams to assess cost-efficient design patterns and participate in buy-versus-build-versus-broker and modernization decisions.
  • Integrate engineering telemetry, cloud billing data, financial planning inputs, and executive reporting; validate data quality and document definitions, assumptions, and controls.
  • Support capacity planning, cost allocation, tagging, chargeback, and forecasting processes to improve financial accountability and budget accuracy across engineering teams.
  • Develop automated unit and integration tests, troubleshoot production and data-quality issues, and ensure solutions meet engineering, security, compliance, and operational standards.
  • Communicate findings and recommendations to technical and nontechnical stakeholders, including business value, tradeoffs, risks, and realized savings.
  • Reduce technical debt, simplify operational workflows, share reusable patterns, and coach teammates on cost-conscious engineering practices.
  • Stay current on cloud cost-management practices, AI capabilities, data platforms, and engineering productivity tools; prototype and evaluate technologies for operational efficiency.
  • Exercise independent judgment and discretion in matters of significance; maintain regular, consistent, and punctual attendance; work nights and weekends on variable schedules as necessary; and perform other assigned duties.
  • Follow Comcast's Operating Principles, prioritize customer experience, learn and advocate for its technology and products, work collaboratively, contribute to the Net Promoter System, drive results, promote inclusion and diversity, and act responsibly toward colleagues, customers, investors, and communities.
