About The Position

This position provides a unique opportunity to interact with all locomotive subsystems with controls content while developing the Next Gen Locomotive Control Architecture that modernizes the electronics, software, applications, and network communication, with the objective of improving software quality, improving engineering productivity, meeting cyber security expectations, all while addressing the latest customer needs. This HMI Software Engineer will focus on delivering and sustaining an integrated series of core software services that are foundational to the HMI architecture. The Engineer will contribute to the design, development, implementation, testing, and review of those core software services. This responsibility is cross functional in nature and requires close collaboration amongst various software teams.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related engineering discipline
  • Experience designing, developing, testing, and integrating embedded software on Linux-based and ARM platforms
  • Proficiency with C/C++, Bash, Docker, and embedded RTOS environments
  • Experience with hardware/software integration, CI/CD pipelines, and professional software development best practices across the full SDLC
  • Strong ability to prioritize tasks, manage tradeoffs, and meet program objectives
  • Willingness to support hands-on validation in simulation labs and on-locomotive environments, including required travel

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with DDS, GoogleTest, Model-Based Systems Engineering (SysML), and cybersecurity standards
  • Knowledge of HMI and graphics-based systems (e.g., OpenGL)

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, maintain, and test HMI software, including infrastructure and application services interfacing with the control system
  • Ensure HMI software meets configurability, performance, cybersecurity, and quality requirements
  • Analyze control system requirements to understand design intent and align HMI capabilities
  • Derive and allocate HMI software requirements and interfaces from system-level requirements
  • Develop, execute, and review unit and integration test plans for hardware/software and software/software interactions
  • Troubleshoot and resolve HMI software defects across multiple test environments
  • Produce and maintain technical documentation in accordance with engineering standards and procedures
  • Support verification and validation through execution of validation test cases
  • Communicate significant issues, risks, and project developments in a timely manner
