About The Position

Enlighten is seeking a Software Engineer to design, develop, and implement complex software capabilities for computer-based systems. The engineer will work closely with other engineers to deliver software solutions for clients in a collaborative, fast-paced small-business environment. The role uses a hybrid work approach, with on-site support at a customer site in Hanover, Maryland, and Enlighten’s Columbia, Maryland office. The position requires an active Top Secret U.S. Government security clearance and U.S. citizenship. The anticipated salary range is $115,199 to $155,000. The engineer will develop Java-based software, keep current with emerging technologies, and use advanced AI coding agents in software engineering workflows. Responsibilities may include agent-assisted multi-file feature implementations, codebase refactoring, test generation, and review of AI-generated code for security, performance, and architectural alignment. A DoD 8140 / 8570 compliance certification is required within 60 days of employment.

Requirements

Currently hold and maintain an active Top Secret U.S. Government Security Clearance; U.S. citizenship is required.
Five years of experience in Software Engineering, modern Java frameworks, and libraries such as Spring or Guava; alternatively, a bachelor’s degree in a related field with three years of relevant experience, a master’s degree in a related field, or a high school diploma or equivalent with nine years of relevant experience.
Experience designing enterprise APIs.
Experience with RESTful web services.
Experience with microservices architecture.
Experience with object-oriented programming paradigms.
Experience with the agile software lifecycle.
Ability to learn quickly and work independently as well as in a team setting.
Experience with the Linux operating system.
Experience with configuration management tools such as Git, Nexus, or Maven.
DoD 8140 / 8570 compliance certification required within 60 days of employment.
Ability to work at the customer site in Hanover, MD, 1–2 days per week, and Enlighten’s Columbia, MD office 1 day per week.
Flexibility to adapt to schedule changes.
Strong working knowledge and experience developing Java-based software capabilities.
Inquisitive nature, responsiveness, excellent testing skills, and strong troubleshooting skills.
Ability to work under pressure with multiple deadlines.

Nice To Haves

Proven use of AI tools such as Claude Code or Gemini in daily engineering workflows.
Experience using autonomous agents for multi-file implementation, refactoring, and automated testing.
Experience with cloud-based technologies such as AWS or Azure.
Experience with distributed databases, NoSQL databases, or full-text search engines such as Elasticsearch, MongoDB, or Solr.
Scripting experience.
Prior experience or familiarity with data lakes or data warehouses.
Understanding of Agile software development methodologies and standard software development tool suites such as JIRA, Confluence, or GitHub Enterprise.
