Software Engineer - Camera

Apple•Cupertino, CA

About The Position

Apple’s Camera ISP team is seeking an embedded software engineer to develop camera software across firmware, kernel, and user space for Apple products, including iPhone, iPad, and Mac. The role focuses on low-level systems that support imaging experiences and image signal processing (ISP) pipelines. The engineer will help design, implement, maintain, and test camera and ISP features, collaborating with Silicon Design, Camera Hardware, Media Frameworks, and QA teams. The position involves translating complex requirements into robust implementations, supporting hardware validation and manufacturing diagnostics, and developing system software for secure sensor subsystems such as Face ID and Optic ID. The team emphasizes innovation, collaboration, ownership, reliability, performance, and maintainability in a fast-paced product development environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 3 years of relevant industry experience.
  • At least 3 years of embedded or systems software development experience.
  • Proficiency in C and C++.
  • Proficiency in developing real-time software in embedded environments.
  • Experience with low-level software development, including hardware-software integration and debugging.
  • Familiarity with image signal processing (ISP) pipelines or camera systems.
  • Experience with macOS or iOS driver and kernel-level development.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to convey complex technical concepts clearly across teams.
  • Ability to work independently and adapt in an ambiguous, fast-paced product environment.
  • Proficiency with AI-assisted development tools and workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement low-level drivers and system software for ISP pipelines in embedded environments, targeting Apple SoCs and chipsets.
  • Develop camera features across the software stack, including user-space frameworks, kernel drivers, and firmware.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams to define features, communication protocols, and implementation specifications, and document requirements.
  • Develop system software for secure sensor subsystems powering features such as Face ID and Optic ID.
  • Support hardware validation, factory testing, and manufacturing diagnostics to ensure product quality at scale.
  • Help design, implement, maintain, and test camera and ISP features across Apple products.
