About The Position

Buffalo Manufacturing Works, operated by EWI, is a one-of-a-kind center for advanced manufacturing focused on developing, maturing, and implementing new technologies that have an impact on the clients we work with and the communities in which they live. Located in Buffalo, New York, we are dedicated to building a nationally-recognized hub of manufacturing innovation and are looking for smart, passionate, entrepreneurial, inventive, and driven people to help us achieve this goal. We are looking for an experienced, full stack software engineer to design, build, and help own the software systems that connect and control our advanced manufacturing platforms. This role will work on systems involving industrial networking and communications and will have significant influence over software architecture decisions. The successful candidate will be someone with a proven, professional track record who we can trust to make sound architectural calls and see them through to a well-implemented result. EWI’s Data science group acts as turbo charger for EWI’s innovation engine. We specialize in working cross-disciplinary with EWI’s cutting-edge manufacturing technology teams including additive manufacturing (3D printing), advanced stamping, robotics, ultrasonics, and lasers. Data science focuses include the industrial internet of things (IIoT), digital thread in manufacturing, using in-line sensing to predict part quality, semi-analytical modeling, probabilistic modeling, and data modeling.

Requirements

Full stack engineering expertise, ideally including: Backend development in Python (e.g., building services, APIs, and data pipelines); FastAPI preferred
Front-end development with React (plus solid HTML/CSS/JavaScript fundamentals)
Working with relational and/or NoSQL databases, including schema design and query optimization; SQL preferred
Demonstrated experience designing software architecture for non-trivial systems, and the judgment to make and defend those design decisions
Practical experience with containerization (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes) in production or near-production settings
Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines
Strong fundamentals in version control, automated testing (both backend and front-end), and code review practices
Experience leveraging AI agents to accelerate development
Ability to communicate clearly with both engineers and non-technical stakeholders
Ability to work well with evolving priorities in a collaborative, cross-disciplinary environment
Utilizes judgment in communication styles and behaviors; recognizes impact on other team members
Exhibits proficient written and verbal communication with customers both internal and external; including direct experience presenting technical work to customers
Proven adaptability and flexibility as a part of team
Ability to maintain excellent customer relationships both internal and external
Strong ability to plan and organize tasks
B.S. in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience; we heavily weigh real-world industry experience
Three (3) to eight (8) years at a software-focused company with real, hands-on professional software engineering experience

Nice To Haves

Experience with the kind of industrial networking and communications used in manufacturing/IoT environments (e.g., MQTT, Sparkplug B, OPC UA, or similar protocols)
Familiarity with industrial automation and batch/sequential control
Experience with cloud infrastructure and infrastructure-as-code
Additional front-end/back-end experience such as TypeScript, Node.js, or state management libraries commonly used alongside React
Advanced degree a plus but not required

Responsibilities

Build full stack applications end-to-end, from backend services and APIs to the front-end interfaces users interact with
Design and evolve software architecture for systems that integrate sensors, controllers, and industrial equipment on the shop floor
Build and maintain containerized services and the CI/CD pipelines that test, package, and deploy them
Contribute to architectural decisions, exercising sound engineering judgment on trade-offs (reliability, scalability, maintainability, security)
Collaborate with manufacturing process experts and other engineers to translate real-world requirements into robust software systems
Establish and uphold engineering best practices: code review, testing, documentation, and version control discipline
Mentor other engineers and communicate architectural intent clearly enough that others can build on it correctly
Present technical approaches and trade-offs to stakeholders and, where relevant, contribute to conference presentations, publications, or patents
