About The Position
We are sharing a specialised part-time consulting opportunity for experienced Software Engineers with strong expertise in Python, Java, Rust, Go, C++, TypeScript, algorithms, debugging, feature development, refactoring, and performance optimisation to contribute to an advanced AI training and software engineering evaluation project. Selected professionals will create reproducible reinforcement-learning environments designed to test advanced AI systems on realistic software engineering problems. Assignments may involve debugging complex code, implementing features, refactoring existing systems, improving performance, and developing validated reference solutions. The work requires strong hands-on engineering ability, sound technical judgement, and the ability to document solutions clearly. No prior experience in AI is required.
Requirements
- Significant hands-on expertise in at least one of Python3, Java, Rust, Go, C++, or TypeScript
- Deep understanding of algorithms, data structures, and software engineering fundamentals
- Proven ability to debug complex systems and resolve technically challenging defects
- Strong experience implementing production-quality features
- Experience with performance optimisation and technical bottleneck analysis
- Strong ability to reason about code correctness, edge cases, maintainability, and system behaviour
- Excellent technical documentation and communication skills
- Ability to review other engineers' code and explain technical concerns precisely
Nice To Haves
- Background in large-codebase refactoring or legacy-system modernisation is advantageous
- Track record of delivering meaningful features from design through implementation
- Interest in AI systems and technical evaluation is beneficial
- No prior experience in AI training is required
Responsibilities
- Contribute expert-level code and technical solutions in Python3, Java, Rust, Go, C++, TypeScript, or comparable languages
- Work across realistic production-style codebases and software engineering scenarios
- Implement robust new functionality while considering scalability, maintainability, and software quality
- Apply sound algorithms, data structures, and engineering principles to complex development tasks
- Produce solutions that can be reproduced and independently validated
- Analyse and resolve complex software defects across diverse codebases
- Identify root causes of bugs, incorrect behaviour, and system failures
- Diagnose performance bottlenecks and inefficient implementation patterns
- Develop technically rigorous fixes rather than superficial workarounds
- Address edge cases and validate that solutions behave correctly across relevant conditions
- Refactor legacy or complex code to improve readability, maintainability, and reliability
- Identify architectural or implementation weaknesses that limit long-term scalability
- Optimise software performance while preserving correctness
- Evaluate trade-offs between performance, complexity, maintainability, and development effort
- Modernise existing code where appropriate without introducing unnecessary regressions
- Create reinforcement-learning environments that test AI systems on complex software engineering tasks
- Develop reproducible problem environments and corresponding golden reference solutions
- Design tasks involving bug fixing, feature implementation, refactoring, and performance optimisation
- Document technical reasoning, implementation decisions, and validation methodology clearly
- Review and validate peer-contributed code and technical submissions for correctness, clarity, and reproducibility

- Compensation is output-based, with payment made for tasks that meet project specifications

- Selected professionals should be prepared to begin their first tasks within approximately 24–48 hours of completing onboarding
- Roles are typically filled within approximately 48 hours

- Work must be completed without using confidential or proprietary information belonging to any employer, client, institution, or other third party
