About The Position

Halogen Engineering Group is seeking a Software Engineer to develop, maintain, and enhance complex software systems, including processing-intensive analytics, novel algorithms, extremely large data sets, real-time systems, and business management information systems. The work is based on documented requirements and may be performed individually or as part of a team. The role includes reviewing and testing software components against design requirements, documenting test results, resolving software problem reports, and applying software development and design methodologies appropriate to the development environment. The engineer also contributes to system design decisions, including hardware/software trade-offs, software reuse, COTS/GOTS use, and translating system-level requirements into software-component requirements. The position calls for a software engineer with operational ownership experience who can work across the software development lifecycle. In addition to building software, the engineer should be comfortable with deployment, automation, cloud infrastructure, troubleshooting, and production support. The role is not limited to application development or traditional system administration. The candidate is expected to be on call to support system operations and may serve as a technical lead for software development teams. The role is onsite at Fort Meade, Maryland, on the day shift, and requires a current TS/SCI clearance and a polygraph less than five years old. Travel is not required. The projected annual compensation range is $210,000–$222,000.

Requirements

  • Twenty years of experience as a software engineer on programs and contracts of similar scope, type, and complexity.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related discipline from an accredited college or university; four additional years of SWE experience on projects with similar software processes may substitute for the degree.
  • Current TS/SCI security clearance.
  • Polygraph required and must be less than five years old.
  • Familiarity with continuous integration frameworks such as GitLab CI, Jenkins, or GitHub Actions.
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform or Ansible.
  • Working knowledge of Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Proficiency with a major cloud service provider: AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
  • Expected to be on call to support system operations.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze user requirements and derive software design and performance requirements.
  • Debug existing software and correct defects.
  • Recommend and implement improvements to documentation and software development process standards.
  • Design, code, develop, and modify software, including adding features, correcting errors, adapting to hardware, and improving performance.
  • Integrate existing software into new or modified systems or operating environments.
  • Develop simple data queries and design or implement complex database or data-repository interfaces and queries.
  • Write or review software and system documentation.
  • Develop and implement algorithms that meet system performance and functional standards, including complex algorithms subject to strict timing, resource, or interface constraints.
  • Assist with developing and executing software-component test procedures and document test results.
  • Analyze system performance, systems flow, data use, work processes, and problem areas to develop software solutions.
  • Use scientific analysis and mathematical models to predict and measure software design outcomes.
  • Perform quality control on team products and ensure quality control of developed and modified software.
  • Serve as a team lead or technical lead, oversee software development teams, delegate programming and testing responsibilities, and monitor team performance.
  • Confer with system and hardware engineers to derive software requirements and understand project limitations, capabilities, performance requirements, and interfaces.
  • Coordinate software system installation and monitor equipment operation to ensure specifications are met.
  • Recommend technologies and processes for complex software projects.
  • Select the software development process in coordination with the customer and system engineering.
  • Deploy, automate, troubleshoot, and support software in production environments.
  • Support system operations on call.
