About The Position

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will lead the delivery of scoped features and solutions by collaborating with cross-functional teams to develop, test, and maintain high-quality software systems. This role requires expertise in software development lifecycle, AI/ML integration, and scalable solution design. You will drive continuous improvement, mentor peers, and ensure alignment with platform and business objectives. Your technical judgment and proactive problem-solving will support reliable, efficient, and innovative software delivery that meets stakeholder needs and advances Walmart’s technology goals. The Backbone Engineering team combines engineering, UX, and product management to rapidly develop new products and site features using open-source technologies such as Java, React, NextJS, Fastify, GraphQL, Kubernetes, and TypeScript. The team delivers high-performing solutions on a modern platform, emphasizing continuous innovation and iterative development. Immediate feedback from business customers drives ongoing improvements, fostering a dynamic environment focused on scalable, reliable software delivery. Collaboration and technical excellence are central, enabling the team to meet evolving business needs with efficient, well-designed solutions.

Requirements

  • Proven expertise in object-oriented programming and documentation-based coding practices.
  • Strong experience delivering scoped features through iterative development and collaborative engineering.
  • Proficiency in debugging, code review, and continuous integration/deployment processes.
  • Ability to design scalable, secure, and maintainable software solutions aligned with technical standards.
  • Experience integrating AI/ML components and leveraging generative AI tools to enhance development.
  • Skilled in translating complex business problems into actionable technical requirements with measurable outcomes.
  • Demonstrated technical judgment, adaptability to change, and commitment to engineering excellence.
  • Effective collaboration and clear communication across cross-functional teams.
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 3 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.
  • 5 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Computer Information Systems, Software Engineering, or related area and 1 year's experience in software engineering or related area.
  • Background in creating inclusive digital experiences, demonstrating knowledge in implementing Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standards, assistive technologies, and integrating digital accessibility seamlessly.
  • Knowledge of accessibility best practices and joining the company to create accessible products and services following Walmart’s accessibility standards and guidelines for supporting an inclusive culture.

Responsibilities

  • Own scoped feature and model delivery through collaborative engineering teams, managing implementation, iteration, testing, and support.
  • Write clean, efficient, and reliable code using multiple programming languages and drive full software development lifecycle including CI/CD deployments.
  • Integrate AI and ML components to enhance software intelligence and leverage generative AI tools to improve development velocity.
  • Assist in solution design, participate in design reviews, and ensure scalable, secure, and maintainable software systems.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to translate business needs into technical requirements and define success metrics.
  • Monitor application performance, conduct maintenance, and ensure adherence to project timelines.
  • Promote engineering excellence through mentorship, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement initiatives.
