Software Engineer (Level 3/4)
About The Position
Northrop Grumman is recruiting mid-level and senior software development engineers to develop, integrate, deploy, and sustain satellite ground software. The position is based onsite at the company’s Dulles, Virginia/McLean, Virginia campus and requires a current or active Top Secret clearance at the time of application. U.S. citizenship is required. Travel is expected 10% of the time, and relocation assistance may be available. The work includes full-stack development across operating system, platform, and mission-specific software layers. Engineers develop client and server applications and services using service-oriented or object-oriented architectures and message-bus-based data exchange. Applications use a range of languages and tools, including Python, C++, Postgres, Ansible, cloud infrastructure provisioning, PKI, and static code analysis. The role also supports operations, acceptance testing, test automation, configuration and installation of ground-segment software, and resolution of software defects. Engineers provide ground-software support during launch and launch-rehearsal events and troubleshoot software errors as well as hardware issues affecting software operation. The position may be filled at Software Engineer Level 3 or Level 4.
Requirements
- Demonstrated software development experience.
- Experience with Python application development, C++, and Bash scripting.
- U.S. citizenship.
- A current or active Top Secret clearance at the time of application.
- For Level 3: Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field (ideally Computer Science or Engineering) and 5 years of experience, or a master’s degree and 3 years of experience, or a Ph.D.; experience may substitute for the degree with an additional 4 years.
- For Level 4: Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field (ideally Computer Science or Engineering) and 8 years of experience, or a master’s degree and 6 years of experience, or a Ph.D. and 3 years of experience; experience may substitute for the degree with an additional 4 years.

Responsibilities
- Develop full-stack software at the operating system, platform, and mission-specific software layers.
- Develop client and server applications and services using service-oriented or object-oriented architectures and message-bus-based data exchange.
- Support operations of ground software and associated configurations, including troubleshooting software errors and hardware issues that affect operations.
- Support acceptance-test events, including running tests.
- Develop and support test automation.
- Configure ground-segment software.
- Resolve and remediate software defects.
- Implement software enhancements in response to customer change requests or mission needs.
- Provide ground-software support during launch and launch-rehearsal events.
- Support installation of new ground-segment software in operational, development, and test environments.
- Make decisions with overall project budget and schedule in mind.
