Software Engineer, Product Engineering (Internal Apps)

OpenAISan Francisco, CA
$230,000 - $385,000

About The Position

The Business Systems team at OpenAI is seeking Product Engineers to build internal applications end-to-end. This role involves the full product lifecycle, from discovery and user experience to frontend, backend services, data models, workflow orchestration, and integrations with enterprise systems like Finance and Supply Chain. The ideal candidate will possess strong product judgment and engineering depth, comfortable working across the full stack (React, TypeScript, Python) and with enterprise integrations. The goal is to ship useful initial versions quickly while establishing foundations for reuse, security, and long-term maintainability. Direct AI experience is a plus, but strong product engineering skills and reliable execution are the core requirements.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, excluding internships, with a track record of shipping production software.
  • Experience building products or internal tools from idea to production, including making tradeoffs with incomplete or changing requirements.
  • Strong Python experience and comfort building backend services and APIs; experience with FastAPI or similar frameworks is helpful.
  • Proficiency with React, TypeScript, and modern web development, or a strong willingness to work across the stack.
  • Experience with relational databases such as Postgres or MySQL and sound data modeling judgment.
  • Experience designing integrations, distributed systems, asynchronous workflows, or order, fulfillment, and supply chain APIs that must handle failures and retries safely.
  • Care deeply about product quality, reliability, security, performance, and the experience of the people who use the software.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with engineers, application owners, data engineers, and business partners.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Temporal, queues, event-driven systems, MCP connectors, AI agents, or evaluation systems is a plus, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Own the full product lifecycle for internal applications, from understanding the problem and shaping the solution through implementation, rollout, measurement, and ongoing improvement.
  • Build useful, clear internal user experiences with React, TypeScript, and modern web technologies, backed by well-designed Python services and APIs.
  • Design integrations with Oracle Fusion, Zip, and other enterprise systems, including order management, fulfillment, and supply chain APIs. Own API contracts, authentication, permissions, validation, data mapping, and safe writes to systems of record.
  • Build durable workflows and agentic systems using Temporal or similar workflow technologies, with appropriate handling for retries, idempotency, human approval, audit logs, observability, replay, and backfill.
  • Apply AI models, tool use, and agents to business workflows where they create real value, with clear validation, evaluation, human review, and operational safeguards.
  • Work directly with Finance and Supply Chain partners to understand their workflows, identify high-value problems, and turn ambiguous requirements into simple, dependable products.
  • Own production quality through testing, monitoring, incident response, security reviews, and thoughtful operational support.
  • Identify patterns across products and contribute reusable application, integration, and workflow building blocks that make future work faster and safer.

Benefits

  • OpenAI offers competitive compensation and benefits.
