About The Position

Syms Strategic Group (SSG) is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to administer, configure, troubleshoot, and enhance the Edifecs platform for reliable and compliant electronic data interchange (EDI) processing. The role supports the Department of Veterans Affairs and is a 100% U.S.-based remote position. Candidates from California, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, or Washington will not be considered. This is a W-2, full-time position with a salary range of $85,389–$116,975. A Public Trust (MBI) clearance is required or must be obtainable, and U.S. citizenship is required. The engineer will work with Edifecs modules including XEServer, XEngine, TPM, SpecBuilder, and EDI Gateway. The role involves developing and optimizing processing rules, routing logic, and batch workflows; diagnosing transaction and performance problems; and supporting deployments, environment refreshes, patches, and upgrades. The position works across EDI, cloud, DevSecOps, business, operations, and security teams. The successful candidate will bring extensive EDI and software or data engineering experience, strong AWS and Edifecs knowledge, and experience operating production systems. The role also calls for communicating architecture decisions to nontechnical stakeholders, documenting system designs and operational procedures, and resolving ambiguous technical decisions with limited direction. A bachelor’s degree in a relevant technical discipline or equivalent practical experience is required. An Edifecs certification is listed under professional certifications; AWS certification is a bonus.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of experience in EDI, healthcare, or enterprise application operations.
  • At least 8 years of experience in software or data engineering with strong AWS experience.
  • Strong knowledge of Edifecs architecture and transaction lifecycles.
  • Hands-on understanding of XEServer orchestrations, batch flows, and execution contexts; XEngine validation, rulesets, and canonical structures; TPM trading partner configuration, routes, and agreements; EDI Gateway visibility, audit, search, and reprocessing; and SpecBuilder implementation guide definitions and map development.
  • Experience with EDI integration and interface management, including AS2, SFTP, FTPS, HTTPS, API-based integrations, and gateway services.
  • Experience diagnosing EDI transaction failures, mapping or misalignment defects, partner-specific rejection patterns, batch job flow failures, and performance degradation.
  • Experience with throughput optimization, engine and JVM performance tuning, memory management, high availability, failover orchestration, and monitoring dashboards.
  • Understanding of AWS EC2 instance sizing, OS tuning, storage I/O patterns, file transfer endpoints, routing, firewall coordination, network path debugging, and SSL/TLS certificate lifecycle management.
  • Proficiency with Git and GitHub, including branching strategies, pull requests, and collaborative workflows.
  • Knowledge of compliance, audits, and partner governance.
  • Infrastructure-as-code experience with Ansible and Terraform.
  • Ability to communicate technical architecture decisions and trade-offs to nontechnical stakeholders.
  • Experience gathering and translating business reporting requirements into technical data models.
  • Comfort driving ambiguous architecture decisions to resolution with limited direction.
  • Experience with Agile methodologies, including Scrum and Kanban, and JIRA.
  • Strong documentation habits, including architecture diagrams, data dictionaries, and migration runbooks.
  • Ability to collaborate with development, operations, and security teams to support production operations.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
  • U.S. citizenship is required.
  • Must possess or qualify for a Public Trust (MBI).

Nice To Haves

  • EDIFECS certification.
  • Deep hands-on experience with Edifecs and X.12 EDI workflows, including medical claims transactions such as 837, 834, 835, and 277; 270/271 and 278 transactions; and 999 transactions.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA compliance requirements in cloud data architecture.
  • Experience with healthcare payer or PBM systems, clearinghouses, or pharmacy operations.
  • AWS certification.

Responsibilities

  • Administer, configure, troubleshoot, and enhance the Edifecs platform to ensure reliable and compliant EDI transaction processing.
  • Configure and maintain XEServer, XEngine, TPM, SpecBuilder, and related modules.
  • Build, deploy, and optimize Edifecs processing rules, routing logic, and batch workflows.
  • Analyze and resolve mapping issues, validation failures, functional errors, and performance bottlenecks.
  • Manage system logging, JVM tuning, and certificate and keystore configurations.
  • Support release deployments, environment refreshes, patching, and upgrades.
  • Collaborate with EDI Analysts, DevSecOps Engineers, Cloud teams, and business teams.
  • Troubleshoot transaction failures, mapping defects, partner-specific rejection patterns, batch-flow failures, and throughput or performance degradation.
  • Optimize job throughput and engine performance, and support memory management, high availability, failover orchestration, and monitoring dashboards.
  • Translate business reporting requirements into technical data models.
  • Communicate technical architecture decisions and trade-offs to nontechnical stakeholders.
  • Document architecture diagrams, data dictionaries, and migration runbooks.
  • Work collaboratively with development, operations, and security teams to support seamless production system operations.
