This role involves analyzing user requirements to derive software design and performance requirements, designing and coding new software or modifying existing software to add new features, debugging existing software and correcting defects, and integrating existing software into new or modified systems or operating environments. The engineer will also develop simple data queries for existing or proposed databases or data repositories, provide recommendations for improving documentation and software development process standards, and develop or implement algorithms to meet or exceed system performance and functional standards. Additionally, the role includes assisting with developing and executing test procedures for software components, writing or reviewing software and system documentation, developing software solutions by analyzing system performance standards, conferring with users or system engineers, analyzing systems flow, data usage and work processes, and investigating problem areas. The engineer may also serve as a team lead, modify existing software to correct errors, adapt to new hardware, or improve performance, and design, develop and modify software systems using scientific analysis and mathematical models. They may also design or implement complex database or data repository interfaces/queries, oversee software development teams, and perform quality control on team products. Collaboration with system engineers and hardware engineers to derive software requirements and obtain information on project limitations, capabilities, performance requirements, and interfaces is also part of the role.
