About The Position

USAA is hiring a Lead Software Engineer to help define the architecture for a high-visibility mortgage transformation and build its target-state lending ecosystem. Blend will serve as the member-facing Point of Sale, while Empower will manage loan origination through funding. The role operates at the release-train level, providing technical direction and guiding multiple Agile teams through solution design and implementation. The lead is expected to be a hands-on technical leader who puts members and the mission first, makes honest and transparent decisions, and enables teams to succeed. The role partners with architects and engineers to build a scalable mortgage foundation. It requires working in the office four days per week and may be based in San Antonio, Texas, or Plano, Texas. Relocation assistance is unavailable. The position calls for deep expertise in enterprise platform engineering and systems integration, strong full-stack engineering skills, and experience aligning implementation across Agile teams. The engineer will contribute to complex solutions and production support, mentor engineers, help define technology direction, apply Site Reliability Engineering practices, and ensure business risks are managed in accordance with risk and compliance policies.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree, or four years of relevant education and/or experience.
Eight years of software development experience demonstrating deep technical expertise in enterprise platform engineering and systems integration, including two years of demonstrated technical leadership providing solution direction, aligning implementation across multiple Agile teams, and driving complex enterprise technology initiatives.
Six years of experience delivering technology solutions across all phases of the software systems and application development lifecycle.
Engineering expertise in either the Blend Point of Sale Platform or the Dark Matter Empower LOS Platform, including core installation, integration into a digital experience, vendor and batch management, customization strategies, ongoing maintenance and support, and end-to-end testing and quality assurance.
Strong hands-on engineering experience across the full technology stack, including responsive web UI applications, APIs and backend services, and event-driven and data integration platforms.
Experience influencing technology integration, solution design, and modernization execution across multiple Agile Scrum teams.
Experience designing, developing, and maintaining a complex software solution involving multiple stakeholders.
Experience integrating AI capabilities into enterprise applications while addressing security, compliance, scalability, observability, and operational support requirements.

Nice To Haves

Expertise in Golang, Java, Python, C++, or similar, and proficiency across multiple technologies and database platforms.
Deep knowledge of cloud-based development tools and processes, preferably AWS.
Hands-on experience with Spring, Spring Boot, and RESTful web services.

Experience building real-time streaming applications with Apache Kafka.

Responsibilities

Design, develop, code, and test complex tactical and strategic cross-functional technical solutions, often collaborating with engineers or architects outside the team or department.
Lead in-depth code and design reviews, and communicate updates and impacts to stakeholders to support smooth daily operations and accurate planning across multiple teams.
Organize work and lead multiple teams to deliver features and solutions.
Independently resolve complex production issues and lead troubleshooting of end-to-end solutions spanning multiple applications and systems.
Mentor and coach junior and experienced engineers, including coaching on design principles for their teams and others.
Work with architecture to help define direction for cross-functional or highly complex key and emerging technologies within a specific domain.
Advance professional development through activities such as industry organization participation, programming publications, educational opportunities, professional networking, and professional societies.
Leverage Site Reliability Engineering practices in the domain.
Ensure business risks are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.
