About The Position

USAA is seeking a forward-thinking and dedicated Software Engineer Lead to join a dynamic, startup-minded team within the Investment Experience Technology organization. This role offers the opportunity to be part of a mission-driven company, working in an agile, fast-paced environment that values innovation. The Software Engineer Lead will guide solutioning and development to deliver a new Line of Business (LOB) Member experience, playing a pivotal role in shaping the technical direction of the new investment services line of business. The position involves working with a modern tech stack, including Go, Java, APIs, and OpenShift, to build the next generation of investment solutions focused on delivering differentiated, digital-first experiences that empower members and financial advisors with seamless, intelligent, and scalable tools. The role requires a passion for building impactful technology, thriving in collaborative environments, and helping to shape the future of investment services. The work environment is flexible, requiring the individual to be in the office 4 days per week, and the position is based in San Antonio, TX or Plano, TX. Relocation assistance is not available.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; OR 4 years of relevant education and/or experience.
  • 8+ years of software development experience, including 2+ years leading enterprise technology initiatives.
  • 6+ years delivering technology solutions across the full SDLC.
  • Deep expertise in Java, JavaScript, Spring Boot, OpenShift, and modern software engineering practices.
  • Enterprise-level experience leading Java-based enterprise application development.
  • Expertise designing and implementing Dynamic UI and Server-Driven UI (SDUI) frameworks using React, Redux, and Spring Boot, including UI metadata contracts, rendering frameworks, component libraries, design systems, personalization, and reusable user experiences.
  • Deep experience designing and implementing scalable API-first solutions using Spring Boot, REST APIs, Docker containers, and enterprise integration patterns.
  • Strong experience designing and leading cloud-native solutions using OpenShift, AWS, containerization, observability, automation, and modern platform engineering practices.
  • Demonstrated leadership building highly scalable, secure, resilient, and performant enterprise applications, including threat modeling, authentication/authorization, secure coding practices, and vulnerability remediation.
  • Deep experience designing and implementing event-driven architectures using Kafka, including real-time streaming, asynchronous processing, topic design, and event-driven integration patterns.
  • Experience integrating UI, APIs, and workflow orchestration platforms such as Flowable, Camunda, or similar BPM technologies.
  • Experience leading integrations with enterprise data platforms, Snowflake, data warehouses, and real-time or batch processing pipelines.
  • Experience with modern engineering practices including TDD, automated testing, Git, GitLab CI, Maven, and Gradle.
  • Experience supporting wealth management, brokerage, investment services, financial planning, advisor workflows, or regulated financial services environments.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Documentum and DocuSign integration is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, code, and test complex technical solutions.
  • Investigate and resolve complex application and system technical problems and production issues through troubleshooting techniques.
  • Continually improve operations by conducting complex systems analysis and recommending changes in policies and procedures.
  • Prepare and install complex solutions by determining and designing system specifications, standards, and programming.
  • Follow the software development lifecycle.
  • Participate in design reviews and learn key system design principles.
  • Mentor junior engineers and may begin mentoring peer engineers.
  • Review teammates' code.
  • Ensure risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.
