About The Position

ACV Auctions is seeking a Software Engineer to join its MAX Engineering team and work on the MAX Digital SaaS product. The role focuses on backend development and maintenance of Go services hosted in AWS, using PostgreSQL and NoSQL databases. The engineer will architect, design, build, and operate scalable enterprise applications, with a strong emphasis on code quality, reliability, performance, and operational excellence. The role includes owning complex initiatives from discovery and requirements through delivery and production support; leading technical design and architecture across systems and services; developing Kafka-based event-processing services and integrations; and maintaining application data models and SQL performance. The engineer will also provide technical leadership through mentoring and code reviews, contribute to roadmaps and technical-debt prioritization, and drive operational maturity through observability, incident response, reliability practices, and post-incident improvements. The position works with software and production engineers and stakeholders in an agile, fast-paced environment.

Requirements

Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.
Minimum 8 years of experience building SaaS web applications using Go and Node.js; 12+ years is desirable.
Strong experience maintaining and extending existing codebases, adapting to established patterns, and tracing execution across services.
Strong experience integrating third-party APIs, implementing authentication and authorization, and developing asynchronous data flows.
Strong experience publishing and consuming Kafka events, designing event contracts, and building reliable event-driven workflows that handle ordering, retries, idempotency, and failure recovery.
Strong experience developing unit and integration tests and setting expectations for test strategy and coverage.
Strong experience with AWS services, specifically SQS, SNS, S3, ECS, EKS, Lambda, and Elasticsearch, as well as Docker and containers.
Strong experience with Docker and Kubernetes, including containerization, orchestration, and serverless deployment scenarios.
Strong experience with CI/CD, build and deployment automation, and release workflows.
Strong SQL programming and data-layer development experience, including schema design, query performance, indexing, and data reliability patterns.
Minimum 8 years of experience working with continuous integration and build tools.
Expertise in version control systems and branching and release strategies.
Expertise in software engineering tools, with experience mentoring others and driving adoption of tools and standards.
Expertise in releases, builds, testing, and the full software development lifecycle.
Expertise debugging distributed systems with distributed tracing and other common tools, leading root-cause analysis, and driving preventative improvements.
Strong communication skills, including clearly communicating tradeoffs and aligning stakeholders.
Experience architecting and designing systems from the ground up, making pragmatic decisions for scalability, reliability, and maintainability.
Experience working with geographically dispersed teams across multiple time zones, including leading technical alignment and delivery.
A BS degree in Computer Science or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience, is preferred.

Responsibilities

Develop services using Go, PostgreSQL, and NoSQL databases such as MongoDB.
Design and build scalable, low-maintenance systems focused on reliability, performance, and operational excellence.
Design, build, and maintain Kafka-based event-processing services, including consuming, deserializing, validating, and persisting events and triggering downstream workflows.
Design and implement service and product interfaces, third-party API integrations, and extensible handler patterns for new integrations.
Develop and maintain application data models, write and tune complex SQL queries, optimize indexes and performance, and design schemas that support application workflows.
Own complex initiatives end-to-end, from discovery and requirements through delivery and production support, aligning engineering and business stakeholders.
Collaborate with software and production engineers to design scalable services, plan feature rollouts, and ensure product reliability and performance.
Design and develop systems across departments, including data, enterprise applications, and IT.
Lead technical design and architecture decisions across systems and services, establishing standards, patterns, and best practices.
Develop custom software patterns to solve complex problems and document tradeoffs and long-term maintenance implications.
Be accountable for product and service performance in a defined area, diagnose production issues, and drive improvements.
Conduct code reviews, create high-quality documentation, and build unit and integration test suites.
Mentor and coach engineers and provide design and code review feedback to improve engineering quality.
Develop roadmaps and prioritize technical debt, balancing feature delivery with long-term platform health.
Drive operational maturity, including observability, incident response, on-call practices, reliability goals, and post-incident analysis with preventative action plans.
Manage competing priorities in an agile environment while maintaining engineering discipline and delivery quality.
