Software Engineer III, Content Storage Gateway

Box•Redwood City, CA
•$165,000 - $206,500•Hybrid

About The Position

The Content Storage Gateway team manages numerous key components of the Box Content Cloud, including the primary services that enable customers to upload and download their content. Every day we solve problems of both scale and performance — our pipeline handles billions of requests and hundreds of terabytes of data daily for millions of users — not only as Box continues to grow, but to support products like Box AI and intelligent content workflows. As a critical piece of infrastructure that literally all content at Box passes through, we deal in best practices for reliability as a matter of course. We're also investing in how AI can accelerate our own engineering — from AI-assisted development workflows to intelligent observability — and we want engineers who are excited to push those boundaries alongside the product work. As we embark on the mission to deliver best-in-class performance and reliability for our customers, both internal and external, we're looking for a Software Engineer III to join us and make a real impact. You'll have the opportunity to work with a small team of talented, collaborative, and fun engineers solving some of the toughest challenges at Box. The work you do will have an immediate impact on the productivity of some of the most important enterprises of our time.

Requirements

  • We are an AI-first company. This means you approach your work with a growth mindset and find ways to leverage AI to help make faster, smarter decisions that will 10X your impact at Box.
  • 3+ years of professional software development experience, with demonstrated ownership of features or components through the full development lifecycle.
  • Experience deploying and operating microservices in a cloud environment.
  • Experience building services and/or tooling using languages such as Java, Go, Scala, or Python.
  • Familiarity with distributed systems concepts and metrics-based monitoring and alerting.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, a growth mindset, and a desire to learn new things.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP) or Amazon Web Services (AWS).
  • Experience deploying and operating microservices on Kubernetes.
  • Familiarity with content streaming and storage systems at scale.
  • Experience with or enthusiasm for AI-assisted development workflows — you'll be expected to use these tools actively, not just be curious about them.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement new components of our platform, contributing to technical proposals and design decisions.
  • Optimize upload and download pipelines that handle billions of requests and hundreds of terabytes of data daily across a global infrastructure.
  • Design and implement scalable services with a focus on reliability, observability, operability, and efficiency.
  • Use data — metrics, logs, query analysis — to identify bottlenecks, validate changes, and inform technical decisions.
  • Contribute to feature roadmap discussions and bring ideas for improving our platform.
  • Participate in on-call rotation and drive improvements to incident response and system resilience.
  • Support teammates through code reviews, knowledge sharing, and collaboration on shared initiatives.
  • Actively participate in strengthening engineering processes and culture within the team through a commitment to learning and continuous improvement.
