About The Position

As a Software Engineer III at Avalon, you’ll serve as a senior technical contributor within your team, leading the design and development of scalable, high-quality software solutions that support our business goals. You’ll take ownership of complex features and projects, guiding them from concept to delivery while ensuring technical excellence and alignment with team objectives. While your primary focus will remain within your team, you may occasionally take on project lead responsibilities—coordinating efforts, aligning timelines, and ensuring successful delivery in collaboration with product and design partners. You’ll also work closely with our principal engineers and architects to help shape technical direction, contribute to architectural discussions, and ensure consistency across systems. You’ll be a key voice in mentoring junior and mid-level engineers, conducting thoughtful code reviews, and championing best practices in software development. This is an opportunity to deepen your technical leadership, influence the evolution of our systems, and contribute meaningfully to a collaborative and innovative engineering culture—all while staying hands-on with code and close to the team’s day-to-day work. This position is eligible for remote work, but quarterly travel will be required to Avalon's corporate office located in Tampa, Florida.

Requirements

• Advanced proficiency in one or more programming languages such as Java, Go, or TypeScript, with a strong focus on writing clean, maintainable, and scalable code.
• Deep understanding of relational and non-relational databases, with experience optimizing complex queries and contributing to data modeling decisions.
• Expert-level experience with Git and source control workflows, including managing complex merges, resolving conflicts, and guiding branching strategies.
• Proficient in configuring and optimizing development environments and tooling to support team productivity and consistency.
• Strong experience designing and integrating web services and APIs, including RESTful and event-driven architectures; familiarity with service versioning, security, and documentation standards.
• Comfortable working in Linux-based environments, with the ability to automate tasks, troubleshoot system-level issues, and support deployment pipelines.
• Deep understanding of Agile methodologies and the full SDLC, with experience leading technical discussions during sprint planning, retrospectives, and backlog refinement.
• Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines and tools such as Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or GitLab CI, including pipeline design, testing strategies, and deployment automation.
• Practical experience with containerization and orchestration technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes, including deployment, scaling, and monitoring of services.
• Strong grasp of secure coding practices, performance optimization, and system reliability principles.
• Demonstrated ability to mentor and support the growth of junior and mid-level engineers, fostering a culture of collaboration, learning, and technical excellence.
• Experience contributing to or influencing architectural decisions in partnership with principal engineers and architects.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences, including engineers, product managers, and leadership.
• Proven ability to collaborate effectively within a cross-functional team, while also influencing technical direction and decision-making within the team.

• Extensive experience designing, building, and consuming RESTful services and APIs, with a strong understanding of scalability, versioning, and security best practices.
• Hands-on experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP, including designing and deploying cloud-native applications using services like S3, EC2, Lambda, IAM, and managed databases.
• Proficiency in front-end development using modern frameworks such as React or Next.js, with a strong grasp of component-based architecture, state management, and responsive design using CSS/SASS, Material UI, and/or Bootstrap.

• Experience working in regulated industries or with sensitive data, with a strong understanding of data privacy and security standards such as HIPAA, PHI, and IIHI.
• Demonstrated ability to mentor and support the technical growth of peers, and to contribute to architectural discussions and team-wide engineering standards

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with product managers, designers, and stakeholders to define technical requirements and ensure successful project delivery.
• Contribute to architectural discussions and decisions, working closely with principal engineers and architects to ensure consistency and long-term maintainability.
• Serve as a technical mentor to junior and mid-level engineers, providing guidance, sharing knowledge, and fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
• Conduct and lead code reviews, promoting best practices in code quality, testing, and maintainability.
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex application and integration issues, contributing to root cause analysis and long-term solutions.
• Actively participate in all phases of Avalon’s Agile Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), including sprint planning, backlog refinement, and retrospectives.
• Occasionally take on project lead responsibilities, coordinating technical efforts within the team and ensuring alignment with timelines and deliverables.
• Demonstrate a strong understanding of how technical solutions support business operations and contribute to strategic goals.
• Build and apply deep domain knowledge of health plan operations and related systems to inform technical decisions.
• Participate in the on-call rotation to support critical software systems, demonstrating leadership and accountability for production stability.
