Software Engineer III - Backend & Data Systems (AI Solutions)

BLUE ORIGIN•Seattle, WA
•$164,652 - $230,513•Onsite

About The Position

This role is part of Blue Origin Operations’ software team, which builds tools in direct support of Manufacturing Engineers across Blue Origin facilities. On the AI Solutions team, the engineer owns the backend and data layer behind tools used by a 100+ person Manufacturing Engineering organization. The work centers on reconciling data from enterprise systems that describe products differently and building the trusted data models, integrations, and APIs that applications and AI features depend on. The role combines systems design with close collaboration with Manufacturing Engineers, including time on the production floor to understand their work and validate that delivered tools are useful. The position primarily uses Python and involves owning backend services, APIs, and data models; integrating enterprise systems; improving existing applications; preparing product data for AI use; and deploying and operating services on AWS. The engineer contributes to technical design and code review, supports CI/CD, monitoring, reliability, and a share of on-call responsibilities. The role is fully onsite in Renton, Washington, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Relocation is available.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • At least 5 years of software engineering experience, including demonstrated ownership of production backend services.
  • Strong backend and API development skills in Python or a comparable language, including REST and/or GraphQL interfaces used by applications and AI agents.
  • Relational data modeling and SQL expertise, including safely changing schemas and migrating production data.
  • Experience integrating multiple systems of record, reconciling identifiers, handling incomplete or inconsistent data, and creating pipelines that recover from partial failure.
  • Hands-on experience deploying and operating applications on AWS and containerized infrastructure.
  • Ability to integrate LLMs into products and assess whether AI systems work effectively, including designing evaluations, critically assessing results, and reviewing AI-generated code for correctness.
  • Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills, including working directly with non-technical users to translate needs into software.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident, or lawfully admitted to the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience designing a shared data model or service used by multiple applications.
  • Experience preparing data for retrieval or agentic use, where the data structure enables effective results.
  • Experience modeling complex hierarchical data, such as product structures or bills of materials.
  • Experience connecting documents and engineering artifacts into structured workflows.
  • Experience building software in or directly supporting manufacturing, aerospace, hardware production, or operations.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing execution systems (MES), work-order or work-instruction authoring systems, or PLM, or a demonstrated ability to learn a domain deeply.
  • Experience building internal tools adopted by engineers or operators.
  • Experience with lakehouse and analytics platforms such as Databricks or Spark SQL.

Responsibilities

  • Own backend services, APIs, and data models, primarily in Python, and uphold technical-design and code-review standards.
  • Build integrations that combine product data from enterprise systems and reconcile conflicting representations.
  • Improve, harden, and modernize existing applications, including authentication, data integrity, testing, and technical debt.
  • Structure product data for reliable AI use, and establish human-in-the-loop safeguards and evaluations for AI features.
  • Deploy and operate team services on AWS, including CI/CD, monitoring, day-to-day reliability, and participation in on-call.
  • Work with Manufacturing Engineers to understand their workflows and use data to validate the impact of shipped tools.

Benefits
