About The Position

The Software Engineer II is a mid-level engineering role responsible for designing, developing, testing, and maintaining scalable software solutions with limited guidance. This role owns features and components end-to-end and collaborates with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality payment applications, services, and systems. The Software Engineer II contributes across all phases of the software development lifecycle—from requirements analysis through deployment and ongoing support—and is expected to uphold Payarc’s engineering standards and secure, PCI DSS-compliant data-handling practices.

Requirements

2–4 years of professional software development experience
Proficiency in one or more of Payarc’s core languages and frameworks (e.g., PHP/Laravel, JavaScript with React or Angular, Java, C#, Python, or Kotlin)
Experience building and consuming RESTful APIs and web services
Experience with relational databases such as MySQL or Oracle
Proficiency with Git/GitHub, including pull requests and code reviews
Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field required (or equivalent practical experience).

Nice To Haves

Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), with AWS preferred
Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines
Experience with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes)
Knowledge of NoSQL databases
Mobile development experience (Android with Kotlin, Retrofit/OkHttp, Firebase) or applied AI/ML exposure
Familiarity with PCI DSS and secure handling of cardholder data
Exposure to encryption standards such as TDES and DUKPT
Experience working in Agile environments with JIRA and Confluence

Responsibilities

Design, develop, and maintain software applications, APIs, and backend services with limited guidance
Build and integrate secure APIs and services, including payment-related functionality, in compliance with PCI DSS
Write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code
Participate in code reviews and pull requests—both giving and receiving constructive feedback—and follow engineering best practices
Collaborate with product managers, UI/UX designers, and other engineers to deliver features that meet user and business needs
Debug, test, and resolve technical issues of moderate complexity, including production defects surfaced through monitoring tools
Contribute to system architecture and design discussions
Optimize application performance, scalability, and reliability
Ensure security, privacy, and data-protection standards are followed, including secure handling of sensitive and cardholder data
Evaluate and adopt new technologies and tools that improve development efficiency
Mentor and support Software Engineer I team members as needed
Participate in Agile/Scrum ceremonies using JIRA and Confluence (as applicable)
