About The Position

Travelers is seeking a Software Engineer II to join its Observability team as the company grows and transforms its Technology landscape. The team works to improve system reliability and mean-time-to-resolution for Business Insurance applications. The role focuses on observability engineering, including Dynatrace and OpenTelemetry, translating business processes into observability requirements, defining business-impact-focused alerts and dashboards, and serving as a subject matter expert for application teams. The engineer partners with application teams to improve observability and reliability across applications and agentic systems, develops and maintains Infrastructure-as-Code for Dynatrace configuration and monitoring workflows, and performs technical analysis, design, development, configuration, defect resolution, and incident response. The role also includes mentoring less experienced employees, working independently on well-scoped and loosely scoped problems, and expanding technical capabilities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, a related STEM field, or equivalent education and/or work experience.
  • Four additional years of software engineering experience.
  • Four years of programming/development experience.
  • Deep, hands-on expertise with Dynatrace SaaS, including Gen3 apps, DQL, workflows, and alert configurations.
  • Hands-on experience with OpenTelemetry, including instrumentation and semantic conventions.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform.
  • Experience with incident response, including triage, root cause analysis, and post-mortems.
  • Experience advising other engineering teams on observability adoption.
  • Experience using AI-assisted coding tools as part of development work.
  • Experience with containerized platforms such as Kubernetes and Docker.
  • Cloud engineering experience; AWS is preferred.
  • Proficiency with source control such as Git/GitHub and CI/CD tooling.
  • Ability to write automation and tooling code; Python and/or JavaScript/Node.js preferred.
  • Familiarity with Linux systems and shell scripting.
  • Intermediate delivery skills, including estimating timelines, delivering work predictably, contributing to software design strategy and methodologies, considering varied use cases, avoiding overengineering, building automation, releasing complete solutions in small batches, and identifying and negotiating tradeoffs.
  • Domain expertise, including understanding relevant technical concepts and industry trends, awareness of business priorities, and in-depth knowledge of immediate systems with some knowledge of adjacent systems.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, including resolving new issues, learning from mistakes, and breaking large problems into manageable parts.
  • Strong communication skills, including communicating clearly with business partners, documenting work, collaborating as a mentor and mentee, clarifying vague requirements, giving and receiving feedback, and listening to colleagues.
  • Intermediate leadership skills, including helping create a safe environment for engineers to learn and grow and demonstrating self-motivation in identifying opportunities and tracking team efforts.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with observability platforms when using Terraform for Infrastructure as Code.
  • AWS cloud engineering experience.
  • Python and/or JavaScript/Node.js experience for automation and tooling.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with application teams to improve observability posture and reliability across application and agentic systems, from instrumentation through mature alerting and service reliability practices, improving mean-time-to-resolution.
  • Perform analysis, design, development, and configuration, including defining technical requirements, accurately and efficiently as an individual contributor.
  • Develop and maintain Infrastructure-as-Code for Dynatrace configuration, onboarding, and monitoring workflows.
  • Analyze, assess, and resolve advanced-complexity defects and incidents, escalating appropriately.
  • Translate business processes into observability requirements and define dashboards and alerts focused on business impact rather than individual system metrics.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to less experienced employees.
  • Work independently to address well-scoped and loosely scoped problems.
  • Seek opportunities to expand technical knowledge and capabilities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
