Software Engineer II

Cohere Health
$107,000 - $130,000Remote

About The Position

We are seeking a Software Engineer II to join our Engineering team. In this role, you will independently deliver features and improvements to healthcare technology that powers prior authorization for health plans covering 15+ million members. You'll own story-sized work from design through deployment — decomposing problems, coordinating dependencies, and shipping reliable software with minimal oversight. You'll partner with your squad, product, and QA to build systems that healthcare practitioners rely on daily. This is an opportunity to deepen your engineering skills, take ownership of meaningful work, and grow toward technical leadership in a high-impact healthcare environment. This is a remote-first role that may require travel to Boston, MA for new hire onboarding and occasional in-person team meetings and company events.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of professional software engineering experience demonstrating independent delivery and increasing ownership
  • Backend development experience using Java or Groovy, including writing and maintaining production services
  • Experience building web applications with React, JavaScript, and TypeScript
  • Hands-on experience with databases (MongoDB or similar NoSQL stores preferred), including basic schema design and query writing
  • Demonstrated ability to independently own story-sized work — decomposing into tasks, implementing, testing, and shipping without daily direction
  • Familiarity with event-driven systems or messaging (Kafka, RabbitMQ, or similar) at a working level
  • Proficiency with version control (Git), automated testing, and CI/CD pipelines
  • Ability to produce accurate effort estimates and communicate status, risks, and blockers proactively
  • Strong code review skills — gives and receives feedback constructively
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or equivalent practical experience

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in healthcare or life sciences industry
  • Hands-on experience with test frameworks such as Cypress, Playwright, JUnit, or Jest
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS) and basic infrastructure concepts
  • Experience supporting production systems (incident response, monitoring)
  • Experience writing design documents or technical specs for feature work
  • Familiarity with feature flag systems and progressive rollout strategies

Responsibilities

  • Own story-level work independently — decomposing stories into tasks, implementing across the full stack (Java/Groovy backend, React/TypeScript frontend, MongoDB, Kafka), and leading release and support for your changes
  • Design and ship features with strong quality discipline — writing appropriate tests, producing accurate estimates, and confirming priorities with your team
  • Write short design notes for non-trivial work, articulating tradeoffs between approaches before committing to implementation
  • Debug and resolve production issues in your owned area, using logs, metrics, and traces to identify root causes and ship fixes
  • Identify and ship small platform or process enhancements that improve developer experience, code quality, or operational reliability
  • Provide high-signal code reviews that catch issues, suggest improvements, and help teammates grow
  • Support onboarding of new team members and mentor interns or new hires on bounded, well-scoped tasks
  • Coordinate across tasks and dependencies within your stories — working with PM, QA, and adjacent engineers to resolve blockers and close issues through resolution

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, vision, life, disability insurance, and Employee Assistance Program
  • 401K retirement plan with company match; flexible spending and health savings account
  • Flex Time Off + company holidays
  • Up to 14 weeks of paid parental leave
  • Pet insurance
