Software Engineer II, Compliance Core

Chainalysis•New York, NY
•$146,000 - $200,000

About The Position

As a Software Engineer II on the Compliance Core team, you will build and maintain backend services and data processing systems that support real-time blockchain risk evaluation and continuous activity monitoring. The platform screens transfers and withdrawals, reassesses exposure as new information arrives, aggregates risk at user and organization levels, and supplies datasets to other teams and customers. You will work with engineers and Product partners to deliver customer features, improve performance and reliability, and modernize the platform through incremental changes and safe rollouts. The role involves owning scoped projects, contributing to design decisions, and developing expertise in distributed systems and the compliance domain, with guidance on broader architectural decisions. Chainalysis expects employees to use AI-assisted tools thoughtfully, take ownership of the output, and ensure its quality. The company provides tools and opportunities to experiment, while expecting employees to build AI fluency, bring ideas, and collaborate on improving how work gets done.

Requirements

  • Experience using AI-assisted development tools to improve development efficiency, supported by strong engineering fundamentals and examples of verifying and improving AI-generated output.
  • Experience building and maintaining production backend services, including APIs and database integrations.
  • Proficiency in an object-oriented programming language; willingness to learn Java, which is primarily used by the team.
  • Experience developing cloud-based services on AWS or another major cloud provider.
  • Understanding of microservices and distributed systems fundamentals.
  • Experience with SQL and relational databases, including data modeling and query writing.
  • Familiarity with event-driven architectures or streaming applications, including how failures, retries, and duplicate events affect data correctness.
  • Record of delivering well-tested code, diagnosing issues, and taking responsibility for software in production.
  • Clear communication and a collaborative approach with engineering and Product partners.
  • Interest in blockchain and cryptocurrencies, or eagerness to learn; prior blockchain experience is not required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Java and Spring, Kafka, or Apache Flink.
  • Experience with Kubernetes, Docker, Terraform, or production observability tools.
  • Experience improving or migrating production systems while maintaining service continuity.
  • Experience with customer-facing systems with strict latency or availability requirements.
  • Background in compliance, payments, fraud, or another regulated domain.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain backend services and APIs for transfer and withdrawal screening, continuous monitoring, and risk aggregation.
  • Develop event-driven data ingestion and processing systems for increasing volumes of blockchain activity, with attention to correctness, throughput, and latency.
  • Own scoped features and improvements from design through implementation, testing, deployment, and production support.
  • Contribute to platform modernization by improving existing services and delivering incremental migrations with safe rollouts.
  • Partner with Product and engineering teams to clarify requirements, discuss tradeoffs, and deliver customer-focused changes.
  • Improve automated tests, monitoring, and documentation to make system behavior understandable and help detect problems early.
  • Participate in code reviews, debug production issues, and contribute to incident response and blameless postmortems.
  • Use AI-assisted development tools while verifying generated output and maintaining responsibility for software quality.
