About The Position

The Software Engineer II is an early- to mid-career contributor that has a combination of formal education and experience in the software engineering field. They are responsible for researching, designing, developing, analyzing, testing, and implementing software operating or application systems. They communicate project information to client, project manager, or other design personnel working on projects. They maintain good working relationships with clients and staff. They write and maintain complete documentation. They support team members and ensure established goals and deadlines are met. They keep management informed of status and significant problems. The Software Engineer II is an early- to mid-career contributor who independently delivers features and integrations within an assigned area. They develop and maintain web applications, services, and integrations across the team's platforms, write tested and maintainable code, and support the reliability of student- and staff-facing systems. They work within established team architecture and patterns, collaborate in Agile teams, and grow their expertise through knowledge-sharing and mentoring from senior engineers.

Requirements

Understanding of the software development lifecycle: planning, estimation, coding, testing, reuse, security, integrations, and operational support; understands the strengths and trade-offs of common SDLC models.
Proficiency in building web applications and services with Java/Spring Boot and/or Node.js, TypeScript/JavaScript, and Angular.
Experience with web services and integration: REST, SOAP/SOA, XML, JSON, and SSO (SAML/OAuth2/OIDC).
Ability to design and implement features and integrations that meet functional and non-functional requirements, with appropriate attention to security, scalability, and reliability.
Ability to produce reasonable, well-reasoned estimates and comparatively size work.
Ability to design and execute effective unit, integration, and regression tests, analyze results, and correct problems.
Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, version control (Git), and branching/release practices.
Familiarity with cloud services (AWS) and containerized delivery (Docker); familiarity with observability tools (e.g., Dynatrace, CloudWatch).
Good troubleshooting and performance-tuning skills; able to partner with Operations on problem-solving.
Secure coding (OWASP) and FERPA/student-data awareness; builds with accessibility (WCAG/ADA) in mind.
Uses AI-assisted development tools with judgment about when output needs human verification.
Writes clear, current technical documentation.
Communicates effectively with peers, leads, and management; surfaces problems early and escalates appropriately.
Works equally well in self-managed and team-based Agile projects; shares knowledge and mentors peers within their area of expertise.
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field. Equivalent relevant experience may substitute for the degree, generally at a rate of one year of experience per one year of education, at the hiring manager's discretion.
3+ years of experience building web applications and services in software development.
Experience developing web applications and services using Java (Spring Boot) and/or Node.js, TypeScript/JavaScript, with Angular on the front end (current major version — e.g., v18+), including interfacing with databases and integrating third-party products (e.g., ServiceNow, Salesforce) with existing infrastructure.
Experience with REST APIs and system integrations.
1+ year of experience with AWS or another cloud platform.
Strong verbal and written English communication skills.

Nice To Haves

Experience with Nuxeo/Hyland (DAM/OnBase/Perceptive) or comparable ECM/DAM platforms.
Docker and Kubernetes.
CI/CD pipelines and deployment automation.
Data integration/ETL and data migration (e.g., AWS Athena).
Salesforce and/or ServiceNow integration development.
Accessibility testing (axe-core, Playwright/Cypress).
Agile/Scrum delivery experience.

Responsibilities

Develop and maintain web applications and services using Java/Spring Boot, Node.js, TypeScript, Angular, REST, XML, and HTTP, following the team's established patterns and standards.
Independently deliver features and integrations on time and to quality when given design guidance; write clean, maintainable code and effective unit and integration tests.
Design features and components within the team's existing architecture; participate actively in design and code reviews.
Build and support integrations between third-party products and existing infrastructure (e.g., ServiceNow, Salesforce, Nuxeo/Hyland DAM).
Contribute to performance tuning and reliability of high-utilization, 24x7 systems; participate in the on-call rotation and resolve incidents in the team's services.
Diagnose and resolve defects in existing and complex systems without introducing regressions; address technical debt within their area.
Work within the team's CI/CD pipeline and version-control/branching strategy; troubleshoot build and deployment failures.
Work with internal customers to gather business processes and requirements; read beyond the stated requirement to deliver implied non-functional needs (security, monitoring, accessibility).
Apply secure engineering practices (OWASP), authentication/SSO (SAML/OAuth2/OIDC), and FERPA-compliant handling of student data.
Ensure accessibility (WCAG/ADA) in student- and staff-facing web applications.
Use AI-assisted development tools effectively and responsibly (no student PII in prompts), verifying output before use.
Identify risks and dependencies in their own and the team's work; suggest mitigations and escalate appropriately.
Write clear technical documentation that others can build from.
