About The Position

Salesforce is seeking a Software Engineer II for their Datastores team. This role involves building and operating the database platform that powers Slack, managing thousands of stateful hosts and petabytes of online database capacity. The team is responsible for one of the fastest-growing database platforms globally, utilizing MySQL databases running in Vitess. The core infrastructure group at Slack operates at a tremendous scale, processing millions of events per second and ensuring systems are performant, highly available, reliable, and scalable. The ideal candidate will contribute to the lower levels of the stack, including datastores and caches, ensuring Slack functions seamlessly for its users.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience in Database, Site Reliability Engineering, or infrastructure-owning teams with increasing responsibilities.
  • Professional experience using Go, PHP/Hacklang, Python, Ruby, or Java.
  • Ability to write code that is easily understood by others with an eye towards clarity and maintainability.
  • Experience working with distributed data storage systems at scale in a team environment (e.g., MySQL/Postgres, Kafka, Cassandra, or ElasticSearch).
  • Experience deploying server software on Linux, operating it at scale, debugging problems, and optimizing performance.
  • Experience operating cloud infrastructure, especially AWS.
  • Familiarity with deployment automation/configuration management tools like Chef, Terraform, Ansible, or Puppet.
  • Excitement to learn new technologies, explain technical concepts, and identify trade-offs.
  • Curiosity about how things work and eagerness to fix them when they break.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and enhance large, highly-available database infrastructure using technologies like MySQL and Vitess.
  • Develop tools to enable self-service and self-managing capabilities of the database infrastructure.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams on their database storage needs and advise them throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Write code to capture database performance and create tools and dashboards for actionable insights.
  • Participate in the on-call rotation and collaborate with the operations team to resolve production issues.
