About The Position

Collins Aerospace is seeking a motivated Electrical or Computer Engineering candidate to join its Microelectronics Technology Directorate within the Applied Research and Technology organization. The role supports Mission Systems products by developing and optimizing Board Support Package (BSP) solutions for custom hardware, including bootloaders, tailored Linux kernels, and device drivers. The engineer will work with multidisciplinary software, systems, hardware, and FPGA teams on aerospace and defense technologies. The position involves developing and maintaining customized Linux operating system components, including the build toolchain, kernel, root filesystem, bootloader, device drivers, and BSP across a variety of hardware boards. Work also includes contributing to embedded Linux software development and support, investigating hardware-software issues, and preparing software builds for simulation, reference platforms, and target hardware using Collins Aerospace processes and tools. The employee will learn embedded engineering best practices and Collins’ engineering processes, work with technologies developed in-house and by external vendors, and gain exposure to embedded Linux and low-level software used in communications, security, and space-based products. The position is primarily onsite in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and requires an active security clearance after the first day.

  • Strong communication skills and the ability and desire to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Adaptability, determination to complete tasks according to program schedules, and contribution to a positive work environment.
  • Consistent exemplary results on projects and teams.
  • Prior RTX internship, co-op, or work experience.
  • Must have or be capable of obtaining a U.S. Department of Defense security clearance; candidates are subject to a government security investigation or reinstatement and must meet eligibility requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and continuously enhance the customized Linux operating system ecosystem, including the build toolchain, kernel, root filesystem, bootloader, device drivers, and board support packages for a range of hardware boards.
  • Contribute to the design, coding, testing, delivery, and ongoing support of embedded Linux software systems.
  • Participate in root cause analysis and resolution of complex hardware-software issues.
  • Prepare software builds for execution in simulation environments, on reference platforms, and on target hardware.
  • Use appropriate Collins Aerospace processes and tools during product development to improve product quality and customer satisfaction.
