About The Position

As a Software Engineer III in Upbound’s engineering department, specializing in Ruby on Rails, you will play a crucial role in designing, developing, and maintaining our core backend software platforms and distributed services. You will work as a strong, autonomous contributor on a team of talented engineers, helping build high-quality, scalable, and secure software solutions that power our financial platforms.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience in the industry.
  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience in backend or distributed systems development.
  • Strong proficiency in Ruby and Ruby on Rails, with a deep understanding of Rails conventions, lifecycle, and best practices.
  • Strong understanding of software development principles, design patterns, and RESTful API architecture.
  • Experience with Test-Driven Development (TDD) and modern automated testing frameworks (e.g., RSpec).
  • Strong experience in database design, query optimization, and management (PostgreSQL and NoSQL).
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS preferred) and containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Familiarity with microservices, background job processing (Sidekiq, etc.), and event-driven architectures.
  • Solid understanding of Agile methodologies and CI/CD practices.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and collaborative communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Elixir – Experience with or a strong interest in learning Elixir (Phoenix / OTP).
  • Experience with event streaming technologies such as Apache Kafka or message brokers like RabbitMQ/SQS.
  • Experience in the fintech industry or working with high-volume transaction/payment systems.
  • Familiarity with TypeScript/Node.js.

Responsibilities

  • Contributing to the full software development lifecycle, from concept and design to automated testing, deployment, and monitoring.
  • Designing and implementing robust, scalable, and well-documented backend services and APIs primarily using Ruby on Rails.
  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams, including delivery managers, product managers, technical leads, and other engineers to deliver new features and enhancements in an agile scrum environment.
  • Ensuring code quality through comprehensive unit/integration testing (TDD), thorough code reviews, and adherence to team best practices.
  • Identifying and addressing application performance bottlenecks, database query inefficiencies, and potential security vulnerabilities.
  • Mentoring and guiding junior and mid-level developers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and technical excellence.
  • Staying current with emerging technologies and industry trends to drive innovation and efficiency within the team.
