Software Engineer, Data

Interfere•New York, NY
•$160,000 - $250,000•Onsite

About The Position

Interfere is building a product-quality platform that detects user-facing failures in real time and gives teams the context to understand and fix them. The company is a seven-person team in New York, has raised $5.1 million, and is operating in production with design partners. The Software Engineer, Data will own Interfere’s data backbone. Events, traces, logs, runtime behavior, code, and session data flow through the systems this person builds, stores, and makes queryable. Working closely with AI/ML and product teams, the engineer will design the pipelines, schemas, and storage systems that support the product, while making foundational architectural decisions for the growing engineering team. The role focuses on data that is accurate, fast, and affordable at scale.

Requirements

  • Experience building and operating production data infrastructure at meaningful scale, with substantial throughput, cost pressure, and operational consequences.
  • Fluency in distributed-systems tradeoffs, including streaming versus batch, consistency versus latency, full fidelity versus sampling, and storage versus compute.
  • Ability to independently define and ship useful next steps for ambiguous data or infrastructure problems.
  • Treat infrastructure cost as a core design consideration and ensure systems can scale economically.
  • Ability to clearly explain pipeline behavior, failure modes, and tradeoffs to engineers, AI researchers, and product managers.

Nice To Haves

  • Deep experience with high-throughput streaming or stream-processing systems such as Kafka, Flink, Kinesis, or Materialize.
  • Background in observability, telemetry, or session-replay data systems.
  • Experience building vector or hybrid retrieval infrastructure for AI/ML use cases.
  • Comfort across the full data lifecycle, including ingestion, transformation, storage, query, retention, and deletion.
  • Fluency in Go, Rust, Python, TypeScript, or another language suited to the system’s throughput needs.

Responsibilities

  • Build high-throughput ingestion systems capable of handling billions of product events reliably and cost-effectively.
  • Develop real-time stream processing for detection and diagnosis, balancing correctness with low latency.
  • Build storage and query systems that remain performant as customer data grows.
  • Create indexing and retrieval infrastructure that enables agents and models to find relevant context.
  • Design schema, taxonomy, and data-quality systems that accommodate evolving event shapes and product surfaces.
  • Build cost, observability, and reliability capabilities for Interfere’s own data systems.
  • Work closely with AI/ML and product teams on data infrastructure and architectural decisions.

Benefits

  • Health, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Visa sponsorship for exceptional international candidates.
  • Assistance with moving to New York.
