About The Position

Superhuman is hiring a Back-End Engineer to build and operate the systems that power AI agents across its productivity suite, including Go, Mail, Docs, and Enterprise. The role focuses on backend engineering at the intersection of systems engineering and AI, supporting agentic workflows, real-time infrastructure, collaboration, and safe enterprise deployment of AI. The engineer will develop high-throughput production services, core platform services, infrastructure as code, and APIs connecting Superhuman’s AI engine to its products. They will collaborate with ML/AI, Product, and Front-End engineers to deliver AI-powered features, contribute to a culture of documentation, testing, and reliability, and mentor junior engineers. Superhuman offers a dynamic hybrid working model that combines focus time with in-person collaboration.

Requirements

At least 5 years of experience in back-end development.
Strong fundamentals in algorithms, data structures, and system design.
Experience building, deploying, and debugging production systems at scale.
Experience with AWS or another cloud platform such as GCP or Azure.
Comfort working with AI-powered systems, such as building infrastructure for LLM-based features, managing agentic workflows, or integrating with ML pipelines.
Fluency with AI coding tools such as Copilot, Cursor, or Claude Code, and a point of view on how they affect software development.
Deep understanding of CI/CD and infrastructure as code.
Ability to work independently, manage priorities across multiple projects, and collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
Strong product instincts, care for the end-user experience, and ability to make tradeoffs between speed and reliability.

Nice To Haves

Prior experience building backend services for AI products.
Experience with real-time systems, event-driven architectures, or high-throughput API design.

Responsibilities

Build and operate high-throughput production services for AI agent orchestration, connector integrations, and real-time data pipelines.
Design and build platform services, including task schedulers, session and conversation history, client-server protocols, and APIs connecting the AI engine to product surfaces.
Work across the Superhuman product suite, including Go, Mail, Docs, and Enterprise, based on team and role fit.
Collaborate with ML/AI, Product, and Front-End engineers to ship AI-powered features end to end.
Build and evolve infrastructure as code to support high availability for consumer and enterprise customers.
Contribute to an engineering culture emphasizing documentation, testing, and reliability.
Mentor and grow junior engineers.
