Software Engineer - AI Engineer II/III

Applied Medical•Rancho Santa Margarita, CA
•Onsite

About The Position

Applied Medical is seeking a highly skilled AI Engineer to design, develop, and deploy AI-powered applications using large language models (LLMs), AI agent frameworks, and Model Context Protocols (MCP). The role focuses on agentic systems that can perform multi-step tasks, interact with external systems, integrate APIs and tools, and orchestrate complex workflows. The engineer will also implement and optimize MCP-based architectures for reliable tool use, persistent context management, and coordination between agents and backend services. The position is on-site and involves close collaboration with data science, product, and engineering teams. The successful candidate will support responsible AI practices, model safety, and compliance with data privacy regulations, while keeping current with emerging LLM and agentic technologies and assessing their practical applications.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, AI/ML, or a related field.
  • At least 2 years of experience building and deploying AI applications with LLMs such as OpenAI, Anthropic, or HuggingFace.
  • Strong Python skills and experience with Git, FastAPI or Flask, and machine-learning frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow.
  • Hands-on experience with agent frameworks such as AutoGen, LangGraph, or CrewAI and with orchestration strategies.
  • Proficiency with vector databases such as Pinecone, Milvus, ChromaDB, or FAISS, and embedding techniques.
  • Solid understanding of prompt engineering, RAG, and LLM optimization.
  • Familiarity with cloud or on-premises deployment and containerization using Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Experience implementing Model Context Protocols for context management and interoperability.
  • Experience with multi-agent systems, planning algorithms, or reinforcement learning with LLMs.
  • Knowledge of production-grade AI monitoring, logging, and observability.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to thrive in fast-paced, collaborative environments.
  • Ability to work on-site and collaboratively contribute to a positive, supportive team environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Ph.D. in Computer Science, AI/ML, or a related field is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Design, fine-tune, and deploy LLM-based applications for reasoning, planning, retrieval, and automation.
  • Build autonomous AI agents that interact with APIs, databases, and tools using frameworks such as LangChain, LangGraph, AutoGen, or custom solutions.
  • Implement Model Context Protocols for persistent context, coordination between agents, and seamless tool usage.
  • Develop retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipelines, vector databases, and prompt-engineering strategies for context-aware responses.
  • Build scalable backend systems and deploy solutions in cloud or on-premises environments, including Azure or AWS, using Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Stay current with emerging LLM and agentic technologies and evaluate them for practical applications.
  • Collaborate with data science, product, and engineering teams.
  • Ensure responsible AI practices, model safety, and compliance with data privacy regulations.
