Software Engineer, Agentic Discovery

Cloudflare•San Francisco, CA
•$54,000 - $75,000•Hybrid

About The Position

Cloudflare is seeking a Software Engineer to join the Agentic Discovery team. This role involves building the core systems, protocols, and customer-facing tools that power agent-web interactions. The engineer will design and ship scalable software across edge infrastructure, data pipelines, protocol layers, and developer tooling. They will work on cutting-edge standards like WebMCP, MCP, AEO, and agent-native controls to enable content owners to manage how autonomous AI agents find, parse, and safely execute tasks on their digital properties. The team is part of Cloudflare's Emerging Technologies & Incubation (ETI) department, focusing on building new and bold products. The Agentic Discovery team specifically works on making domains readable, discoverable, and callable for autonomous AI agents, contributing to Cloudflare's vision for the Agentic Internet.

Requirements

  • Strong software engineering and distributed systems fundamentals.
  • Experience building and operating reliable, high-throughput production services.
  • Solid understanding of HTTP, APIs, proxies, caching, web security, and web performance.
  • Hands-on experience or deep interest in AI agents, tool calling, Model Context Protocol (MCP), or agent harnesses.
  • Ability to rapidly prototype, evaluate architectural trade-offs, and ship solutions in a fast-moving, emerging technical domain.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Fluency in Rust (with a big plus for experience in async Rust) or TypeScript/JavaScript edge runtimes (e.g., Cloudflare Workers).
  • Hands-on experience with search, Answer Engine Optimization (AEO), web crawling, or RAG platform engineering.
  • Open-source contributions to agent frameworks, protocols, web standards, browser engines, or distributed systems projects.
  • Past experience contributing to a major web framework, proxy, CDN infrastructure, or bare-metal backend cloud provider.
  • Proven track record of debugging and resolving network-level and application-level performance bottlenecks.
  • Understanding of cryptographic concepts (public-key encryption, digital signatures, hash functions) or privacy-preserving web protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Design and ship production-ready services that enable customers to evaluate, test, observe, and measure how AI agents read, represent, and interact with their websites and applications.
  • Build and maintain support for emerging agent protocols and integrations (MCP, MCP Apps, UCP, MPP, WebMCP).
  • Implement fine-grained content controls (access management, licensing, auditing) and agent-native audience/business models (attribution, monetization, and analytics).
  • Write clean, secure, well-tested code, advocate for end-user privacy, and help maintain high system reliability, performance, and documentation.
  • Partner with software engineers, researchers, product managers, design engineers, and cross-Cloudflare stakeholders to take capabilities from concept to production.

Benefits

  • Equity participation in Cloudflare’s equity plan.
  • Protection and acceleration of internet applications.
  • Access to tools and products developed by Cloudflare's edge and network.
  • Opportunity to work on cutting-edge standards and technologies.
  • Collaborative and supportive team environment.
  • Commitment to protecting the free and open Internet through initiatives like Project Galileo, Athenian Project, and 1.1.1.1.
  • Equal employment opportunity and commitment to diversity and inclusiveness.
