About The Position

M.C. Dean is seeking an Engineer 3 to join their Security and Electronic Systems (SES) business unit. This role involves designing, engineering, integrating, operating, and maintaining electronic security services, including intrusion detection, access control, biometric authentication, video surveillance, audio visual, IT systems, perimeter defense, and command and control systems for federal, local, and commercial customers. The company fosters a collaborative and forward-thinking work environment, aiming to build the next generation of technical leaders in electrical, engineering, and cybersecurity industries.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, systems engineering, or a related technical discipline and 5 or more years of progressive software development experience.
  • Strong professional experience with Python, including the design of maintainable applications, services, or automation tools.
  • Hands-on experience with Angular and TypeScript front-end development or C#/.NET development.
  • Demonstrated experience designing software components or subsystems and explaining architectural choices, constraints, interfaces, and tradeoffs to both technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
  • Experience developing and integrating RESTful APIs, services, databases, and web applications.
  • Solid understanding of object-oriented design, data structures, asynchronous processing, error handling, and common software design patterns.
  • Experience with Git-based source control, peer review, automated testing, debugging, and continuous integration practices.
  • Ability to work across disciplines, learn unfamiliar systems, and solve ambiguous integration problems with limited documentation.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to create clear technical documentation and provide constructive technical guidance.
  • Understanding of secure software development practices and experience supporting software after deployment.
  • Applicants selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements, including U.S. Citizenship, for access to classified information; ability to obtain a Public Trust required.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional experience with all three core technologies: Python, Angular and TypeScript, and C# and .NET.
  • Experience integrating electronic security, physical security, industrial control, building automation, audiovisual, network, or other cyber-physical systems.
  • Experience extending or integrating commercial software products through vendor APIs, SDKs, databases, or documented interface protocols.
  • Experience with relational and NoSQL databases, message brokers, event-driven architectures, distributed systems, or microservices.
  • Experience with containers, infrastructure as code, automated deployment, and cloud or hybrid environments such as Microsoft Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud.
  • Experience designing for disconnected, restricted, or security-controlled operating environments.
  • Familiarity with observability practices, including structured logging, metrics, health checks, alerting, and production troubleshooting.
  • Experience working in Agile or iterative product-development teams and helping less-experienced engineers improve their technical skills.
  • Experience delivering software used by field technicians, system operators, or engineering teams in mission-critical environments.

Responsibilities

  • Translate customer, product, and operational needs into software requirements, interface definitions, data models, and testable acceptance criteria.
  • Develop and maintain Python-based services, automation workflows, data-processing components, and system integrations.
  • Design and implement Angular and TypeScript user interfaces and contribute to C# and .NET components where required by the solution.
  • Create modular system and software architectures for integration products, including component boundaries, APIs, security controls, data flows, deployment patterns, and failure-handling strategies.
  • Integrate commercial off-the-shelf and custom platforms using vendor APIs and SDKs, web services, databases, message-based interfaces, and documented protocols.
  • Produce lightweight architecture and design artifacts such as context and component diagrams, interface specifications, sequence diagrams, data models, and architecture decision records.
  • Collaborate with product managers, systems engineers, cybersecurity engineers, field teams, and subject-matter experts to understand real-world workflows and validate solutions in labs and customer environments.
  • Guide junior software engineers through design reviews, code reviews, pairing, troubleshooting, and the use of consistent engineering patterns without serving as their direct manager.
  • Build automated unit, integration, regression, and system tests; contribute to continuous integration and deployment pipelines and repeatable release processes.
  • Diagnose defects and integration failures across application, database, network, and third-party system boundaries; improve logging, monitoring, and operational supportability.
  • Apply secure coding, dependency management, authentication and authorization, secrets management, and configuration-management practices appropriate for mission-critical systems.
  • Evaluate new technologies, reduce technical debt, and identify reusable components and standards that improve delivery across customer programs.
