About The Position

Auterion is seeking a hands-on Autonomous Drone Software Embedded Engineer to join a swarming program. This role works across the autonomy lifecycle, from developing autonomy capabilities to investigating real-world flight-test data. On a lean, high-impact team, the engineer will drive new feature development, contribute to architecture and design decisions, and make an impact across the team’s projects. The ideal candidate is a self-starter who can work independently amid ambiguity, make decisions, and push projects through to completion. The role involves developing autonomy software and partner integrations, collaborating with hardware engineers, product managers, and external partners, and validating software through simulation before physical deployment. The engineer will also participate in flight-test investigations and help uphold engineering standards through reviews, architecture discussions, and technical documentation.

Requirements

  • At least 1 year of professional engineering experience in robotics, embedded systems, or distributed systems.
  • Deep proficiency in modern C++ or Python, with practical experience designing, reasoning about, and debugging highly concurrent systems.
  • Embedded systems experience working close to hardware on real-time or safety-critical platforms, such as avionics, automotive, or robotics.
  • Strong architectural understanding of distributed systems and the ability to deliberately evaluate and select consensus designs.
  • Familiarity with robust release management, versioned artifacts, and pinned dependencies.
  • U.S. citizenship required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with PX4, MAVLink, and related drone software ecosystems.

Responsibilities

  • Take ownership of and drive new feature development across the autonomy stack and partner integrations.
  • Collaborate with hardware engineers, product managers, and external partners to define system requirements and translate them into robust software architecture.
  • Design and implement distributed state machines, leader election protocols, and fault-tolerant architectures.
  • Deliver clean, readable, maintainable code while managing complex concurrency and contention scenarios.
  • Develop and run rigorous tests in SITL/HITL simulation environments to validate code before physical deployment.
  • Participate in code reviews, architectural discussions, and technical documentation to improve engineering standards.
  • Investigate flight-test issues decisively, applying engineering judgment to physical failure modes and release safety.

Benefits

  • Stock options
  • 401(k)
  • Enhanced maternity and paternity leave
