About The Position

The AWS Identity team builds the secure identity, access, and resource management foundation for customers to scale in the AWS Cloud. By joining the AWS Identity team, you will work on massively scalable, core technologies used for authentication and authorization to all AWS services (such as Amazon EC2, Amazon S3, and Amazon DynamoDB). Our mission is to make it easier, safer and convenient for AWS customers to run their business workloads confidently and securely. As part of this mission, we process large amounts of data and leverage large scale data analysis techniques such as machine learning and automated reasoning to help customers set appropriate access controls across all their AWS environments. AWS has the most services and more features within those services, than any other cloud provider–from infrastructure technologies like compute, storage, and databases–to emerging technologies, such as machine learning and artificial intelligence, data lakes and analytics, and Internet of Things. Whether its Identity features such as access management and sign on, cryptography, console, builder & developer tools, and even projects like automating all of our contractual billing systems, AWS Platform is always innovating with the customer in mind. The AWS Platform team sustains over 750 million transactions per second. A successful candidate for this position is a hands-on manager with established background in either IT operations, cloud computing, or software as a service. You are interested in delivering high-performing, reliable systems in a distributed environment, building and using large data collections and machine learning to deliver the next generation permission experience for all AWS customers. It is a highly technical space. A big part of your role will be to grow and develop your team members and make them successful. You should be able to coach, lead and guide on career, technical and growth topics. You like working in a customer-oriented environment, managing with positive honest feedback, and look forward to work in a high quality international and diverse team. Finally, you will help drive the definition for new features and initiatives or even new AWS services, so you should be comfortable with ambiguity, willing to roll up your sleeves to do the definitional and set-up work needed, quickly unblock your team and have a high level of ownership and accountability.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of engineering team management experience
  • 7+ years of working directly within engineering teams experience
  • 3+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
  • 8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience
  • Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations
  • Experience partnering with product or program management teams

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
  • Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute project plans and delivery commitments; handle the day-to-day activities of the engineering team within an agile environment.
  • Staffing, mentoring, and growing a best-of-class engineering team.
  • Operations of the service as a critical system.
  • Work closely with the engineers to architect and develop the best technical design and approach. Be a hands-on technical leader and contributor.
  • Report on status of development, quality, operations, and system performance to management.
