About The Position

Amazon Web Services (AWS) runs one of the largest networks in the world. This role involves putting services and algorithms in place to control traffic flow across different fabrics of the Amazon network, considering both static topological information and real-time network inputs. The goal is to respond quickly to network changes such as scaling, maintenance, failures, and security events to lower costs and overhead for customers, while improving performance, availability, and reliability. This is an opportunity to scale to two teams and gain experience with Software Defined Networking (SDN), hyper-scale data center networks, cloud infrastructure, large-scale software deployments, algorithms, and SOA. The team empowers individuals to take ownership, work backwards from customer needs, gather requirements, select technologies, design features, deploy software globally, and maintain services in a nimble, agile, startup-like environment. The team is passionate about software and changing the landscape of networking at an unimaginable scale, pushing boundaries in robustness, fault-tolerance, and adaptive algorithms.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of engineering team management experience
  • 7+ years of working directly within engineering teams experience
  • 3+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
  • 8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience
  • Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations
  • Experience partnering with product or program management teams
  • 7+ years of working directly with engineering teams experience
  • 4+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
  • 7+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience
  • Experience with full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations, or experience debugging, profiling, and implementing best software engineering practices in large-scale systems
  • Experience partnering with product and program management teams
  • 3+ years of engineering team management experience

  • Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
  • Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers

Responsibilities

  • Work backwards from customer needs, build and track business metrics by which the team works to improve customer impact.
  • Plan, develop, deploy and maintain network control plane software for highly scaled networks, using SDN and traditional routing/switching solutions.
  • Recruit, coach and mentor senior and junior software engineers.
  • Work with management, customers and adjacent development teams to build state of the art solutions, incorporate new technologies, and algorithms.
  • Set quality standards, build mechanisms and processes for team efficiency, continuously inventing and simplifying.
