About The Position

Emerson is seeking a Software Developer eager to build technology with real-world impact. This role is for curious, motivated engineers passionate about learning and growth in a collaborative environment. Based in Austin, Texas, you will join a diverse community and work as a contributing member of a cross-functional Agile team focused on developing Emerson's PACSystems technologies. PACSystems is used by leading companies in discrete and hybrid manufacturing to control critical processes. You will focus on client-side software used for configuring, programming, visualizing, and managing PACSystems controllers and automation solutions. Your work will directly impact the user experience of engineers and operators in demanding industrial environments. You will contribute to the design and development of next-generation PACSystems software capabilities, utilizing modern development practices like AI-assisted and spec-driven development to accelerate delivery, improve quality, and reduce ambiguity. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related STEM discipline
  • 2+ years demonstrated proficiency in software development principles OR Internship experience in software development principles and a master’s degree in engineering, computer science or related STEM discipline
  • Foundational knowledge of software development in one or more languages such as JavaScript, Python, C#, or C++
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a genuine desire to understand complex systems
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship now and in the future

Nice To Haves

  • Exposure to web or desktop application development using React with TypeScript and/or JavaScript
  • Familiarity with version control systems such as Git
  • Basic understanding of APIs or client-server application architecture
  • Curiosity about or exposure to AI-assisted development tools, spec-driven workflows, or structured specification formats such as OpenAPI or JSON Schema
  • Any experience with Agile or structured development processes
  • Genuine interest in industrial automation, process control, or real-time systems

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with a creative team, participate in code reviews, and engage in Agile activities like sprint planning and retrospectives. Take part in Hackathons, Tech Talks, and Communities of Practice.
  • Learn from experienced engineers, product managers, and subject matter experts in industrial automation to understand the domain and how real-world requirements translate into software.
  • Support the authoring and review of structured software specifications, gaining hands-on experience with spec-driven development practices and AI-assisted development workflows.
  • Write software using modern tools, frameworks, and AI-enabled development practices. Apply spec-driven methodologies to improve quality, reduce ambiguity, and accelerate delivery.
  • Write automated unit tests and contribute to system-level testing to support an automation pipeline and a release-ready product.
  • Actively participate in team retrospectives and contribute ideas for process improvement.
  • Stay curious about emerging technologies, AI development tooling, and spec-driven methodologies, and apply new skills to real problems.
  • Ask questions, challenge assumptions, and understand problems before proposing solutions. Treat every task as a learning opportunity.
  • Engage openly with teammates, actively seek feedback, and commit to continuous improvement in work and craft.
