Software Architect

NucorDallas, TX

About The Position

Nucor Business Technology (NBT) is building the next generation of manufacturing software for Nucor's steel operations and is looking for a Software Architect to set the technical direction for how they design, build, and ship it. This is a hands-on architect role for an engineer who operates at the enterprise level, owning solution design, solution architecture, and software development end to end, and raising all three to the bar the best technology companies are setting right now. The role will lead the architecture of Nucor's manufacturing execution systems (MES) and their modernization alongside their ERP landscape, and the data and integration fabric that ties the mills to the enterprise. The architect will define the patterns, standards, and guardrails the team builds against, make the build-versus-buy and technology-selection calls, and partner closely with mill-embedded engineers, product, and enterprise stakeholders to turn real operational complexity into reliable, high-quality systems. A key aspect of this role is making AI-native development the way NBT builds, expecting architects to architect AI into their products (retrieval-augmented generation, agentic systems, and evaluation-driven delivery) and to use AI and agentic tooling to accelerate the entire software lifecycle. This is not a maintenance role or an ivory-tower role; the architect will both architect and build, and will multiply the engineers around them, shaping how Nucor manufactures steel for decades to come. This is a full-time, permanent position based at the NBT office in Dallas, TX. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the US, as Nucor Business Technology (NBT) will not sponsor the need for a visa now or in the future. Safety is the most important part of all jobs within Nucor; therefore, candidates must be able to demonstrate the ability to initiate, lead, and uphold safety policies, practices, procedures, and housekeeping standards at all times.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field; or equivalent professional experience
  • 6+ years building and shipping production software, with demonstrated architecture or technical-leadership responsibility
  • Deep proficiency in at least one modern language (Python, C#, or TypeScript/JavaScript), with the breadth to review across several
  • Proven solution and software architecture: distributed systems, integration and event-driven design, API design, data modeling, and sound technology-selection and build-vs-buy decisions
  • Deep, hands-on AI and LLM capability — both architecting AI-native systems (retrieval-augmented generation, agent frameworks, evaluation-driven development, LLMOps) and using AI/agentic tooling to accelerate the full software development lifecycle
  • Experience designing integration across system boundaries via APIs and events
  • Cloud architecture experience (Azure preferred)
  • Demonstrated track record of taking systems from architecture through delivery, setting engineering standards, and elevating teams — leading through influence, mentoring, and example
  • Legally authorized to work in the US (Nucor Business Technology (NBT) will not sponsor the need for a visa now or in the future)
  • Ability to initiate, lead, and uphold safety policies, practices, procedures, and housekeeping standards

Nice To Haves

  • Cloud architecture on Azure specifically; OCI also considered
  • Manufacturing or industrial domain knowledge
  • Experience leading large-scale legacy modernization or platform migration
  • Track record establishing AI-native engineering practices or developer-productivity platforms (evaluation harnesses, LLMOps, agentic developer tooling)
  • Strong fundamentals in testing strategy, system design, observability, and CI/CD at scale
  • Cloud or architecture certifications; open-source contributions, patents, or public technical leadership

Responsibilities

  • Set the technical direction for designing, building, and shipping manufacturing software.

  • Use AI and agentic tooling to accelerate the software lifecycle.
  • Architect and build systems.
  • Elevate the engineers around them.
