About The Position

Coaches are responsible for fulfilling the Administrative Responsibilities/Job Description, as outlined below as well as general and sport-specific rules, standards and regulations through OSAA. The coach is expected to keep in regular contact and communication with the athletic director. The coach is also responsible for the activity-specific assignments listed below.

  • Skill in organization, teaching, program development, time management, fundraising, and public relations
  • Seeks additional professional development opportunities
  • A thorough knowledge of the game of softball skill development, training, and coaching techniques
  • Experience coaching softball
  • NFHS certification (Fundamentals of Coaching)
  • First Aid/CPR Card
  • District fingerprint/criminal check

  • Completion for OSAA: Concussion Test, Steroid Program, Heat Acclimatization/Heat Illness Prevention, Interrupting and Preventing Discriminatory Acts
  • Pre-season meeting for student-athletes/guardians
  • Provide opportunity for summer trainings
  • Youth outreach
  • Length of season: March-May
  • 26 games (pre-season and season combined)
  • Number of postseason contest dependent on eligibility for state playoffs

Responsibilities

  • Manage all aspects of HS program (potential summer training opportunities, off-season workouts, tryouts, formations of teams, cuts, practice schedules, culture, calendaring and routines)
  • Hire and train program coaches - establish program expectations, ensure safety of all student athletes, clarify roles and oversee assistance coaches and lower level programs
  • Provide regular communication with athletes/parents/families/staff, OSAA, League, AD’s office, etc.
  • Regularly track the academic progress of all student athletes in the program and facilitate necessary supports to ensure academic eligibility. Oversee and enforce an academic plan of assistance if required.
  • Cooperate with and support other school-sponsored sports and encourage athletes to participate in other programs
  • Develop and oversee a relationship with youth programs to foster development in the overall program
  • Work with local media as needed and establish strong working relationships with community support groups
  • Facilitate fundraising for program
  • Conduct tryouts
  • Plan and execute consistent weekly practices
  • Scouting/game planning
  • Supervise student athletes at practice, games, bus
  • Ride the bus to/from away games
  • Provide clear communication with student athletes/families
  • Facilitate senior night
  • Postseason review with AD
  • Postseason review of student feedback
  • Complete inventory of equipment, uniforms, etc. and communicate needs with AD
  • Facilitate post-season banquet
  • Distribute awards for the season
