About The Position

This position assists students in resolving personal, emotional, and social problems that interfere with their adjustment to school and their ability to benefit from their educational program. The Social Worker consults with parents, administrators, and teachers to address the emotional and social needs of children. This role serves both general and special education students.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in social work
  • Full or temporary approval from the Michigan Department of Education as a school social worker.

Responsibilities

  • Identify factors interfering with student progress and consult with school staff to plan and implement interventions.
  • Utilize social work methods to help students cope with problems and make satisfactory use of their educational experience.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues.
  • Complete comprehensive diagnostic evaluations for students suspected of having a disability and collaborate with the IEP team for special education eligibility determination.
  • Provide direct therapy and intervention for students with disabilities who have emotional or behavioral concerns.
  • Collaborate and consult with principals, teachers, and other personnel to promote the use of existing school programs and assist in planning new programs related to student needs.
  • Coordinate referrals and programming, and act as a liaison with community agencies, private therapists, physicians, and treatment programs.
  • Coordinate or serve as a member of multidisciplinary evaluation teams, special education teams, or child study teams.
  • Assist in fostering the professional learning of school staff.
  • Collect and use data to make decisions regarding student services.
  • Maintain adequate records, files, and student data as required by law (IDEA, FERPA).
  • Conduct Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA) and develop Positive Behavior Support Plans (PBSP).
  • Be trained in and utilize CPI, CPR, and First Aid Strategies.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
