About The Position

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. The Substance Abuse Treatment Team (SATT) Social worker independently provides clinical psychosocial, mental health, and case management services to eligible Veterans who have problems with substance abuse or dependence. Their health care, mental health care, psychosocial problems, and needs are complex and require a high degree of clinical oversight and creative problem-solving. This role facilitates the efficient and appropriate delivery of services across episodes of care, which may encompass discharge issues from inpatient detoxification, ambulatory detoxification, outpatient treatment, and residential treatment within the VA or under contract in community programs. The Social Worker coordinates care with other services within the Medical Center and with community partners, and makes referrals to VA services and benefits, as well as community resources to address financial, housing, legal, transportation, employment, and educational needs.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Subject to background/security investigation.
  • Selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process.
  • Acceptable forms of identification will be required to complete pre-employment requirements.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical evaluation/examination.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement.
  • Must complete all application requirements detailed in the "Required Documents" section.
  • Must serve a 1 or 2-year trial period.
  • Master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).
  • Licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level.
  • Proficient in spoken and written English.
  • For GS-9: None beyond the basic requirements.
  • For GS-9: Demonstrated ability to utilize a Veteran-centric approach when providing interventions and counseling.
  • For GS-9: Demonstrated ability to assess psychosocial functioning and needs and formulate a treatment plan.
  • For GS-9: Demonstrated ability to implement treatment modalities for individuals, families, and groups.
  • For GS-9: Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communicate with clients, staff, and community agencies.
  • For GS-9: Fundamental knowledge of medical and mental health diagnoses, disabilities, and treatment procedures.
  • For GS-11: Completion of a minimum of one year of post-MSW experience equivalent to the GS-9 grade level in health care or other social work-related settings (VA or nonVA experience).
  • For GS-11: Licensure or certification in a state at the independent practice level.
  • For GS-11: A doctoral degree in social work from a school of social work may be substituted for the required one year of professional social work experience in a clinical setting.
  • For GS-11: Demonstrated knowledge of community resources and ability to make appropriate referrals and coordinate services.
  • For GS-11: Skill in independently conducting psychosocial assessments and treatment interventions.
  • For GS-11: Knowledge of medical and mental health diagnoses, disabilities and treatment procedures to formulate a treatment plan.
  • For GS-11: Skill in independently implementing different treatment modalities.
  • For GS-11: Ability to provide consultation services to new social workers, graduate students, and other staff.

Responsibilities

  • Independently provides clinical psychosocial, mental health, and case management services to eligible Veterans with substance abuse or dependence issues.
  • Works with family members and the Veteran as part of the treatment plan.
  • Facilitates efficient and appropriate delivery of services across various treatment settings (inpatient, outpatient, residential).
  • Coordinates care with other Medical Center services (e.g., Vocational Rehabilitation, Health Care for Homeless Veterans Program, PTSD Clinical Team) and community partners.
  • Makes referrals to VA services and benefits and to community resources for financial, housing, legal, transportation, employment, and educational needs.
