About The Position

The Orange County Department of Social Services has an opening for a Social Worker III - Adult Services. This position evaluates adult protective services' reports received by the agency alleging abuse, neglect and/or exploitation of disabled adults as mandated by N.C.G.S. 108A and provides protective services when statutorily appropriate. This position provides services for adults where abuse, neglect and/or exploitation has occurred and these services include developing a plan of protection, case management, counseling, and working with county attorney to obtain necessary legal authority as needed. This position will represent the Department of Social Services in the guardianship process and provide oversight to adult wards and serves as the Director's designee for persons who have been adjudicated incompetent by the Clerk of Court. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master’s degree in social work; OR
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master's degree in a human services field AND one (1) year of work experience in a human services program; OR
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in social work AND one (1) year work experience in a human services program; OR
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in a human services field AND two (2) years of work experience in a human services program.
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined above.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Successful clearance of an SBI background check with fingerprinting.
  • Successful clearance of a pre-employment drug test.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluates adult protective services' reports alleging abuse, neglect and/or exploitation of disabled adults.
  • Provides protective services when statutorily appropriate.
  • Develops a plan of protection for adults experiencing abuse, neglect, and/or exploitation.
  • Provides case management and counseling services.
  • Works with the county attorney to obtain necessary legal authority.
  • Represents the Department of Social Services in the guardianship process.
  • Provides oversight to adult wards.
  • Serves as the Director's designee for persons adjudicated incompetent by the Clerk of Court.
  • Responds to after-hours calls and provides on-site services in emergency shelters when necessary.
  • May be required to serve in shelters during natural and man-made disasters, including overnight and weekends.
