About The Position

Winthrop Middle School is seeking a dynamic and engaging Social Studies teacher to provide high-quality instruction for students in grades 6–8. The successful candidate will create a student-centered learning environment that promotes critical thinking, civic engagement, and historical inquiry. Instruction will align with the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education History and Social Science Curriculum Frameworks and district expectations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in History, Social Studies Education, or related field.
  • Massachusetts teaching license in History/Social Science, grades 5–12 or 5–8.
  • Strong knowledge of history/social science content and inquiry-based instructional practices.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Education or related field.
  • Experience teaching Social Studies at the middle school level.
  • Familiarity with civic engagement and inquiry-based learning models
  • Experience integrating technology into instruction.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver standards-based Social Studies instruction aligned with MA History and Social Science Curriculum Frameworks.
  • Implement instructional practices that promote historical inquiry, analysis of primary and secondary sources, and evidence-based reasoning.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse needs of learners, including students with disabilities and English learners.
  • Integrate civics, geography, economics, and history to support a comprehensive understanding of social studies content.
  • Utilize a variety of instructional strategies, including technology, to enhance student engagement and learning.
  • Develop and administer formative and summative assessments to monitor student progress.
  • Use student data to inform instruction and provide targeted support.
  • Provide timely, meaningful feedback to students and families.
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress in accordance with school and district policies.
  • Establish a positive, inclusive, and culturally responsive classroom environment.
  • Promote high expectations for student behavior and academic achievement.
  • Implement classroom management strategies that support a safe and productive learning space.
  • Collaborate with grade-level teams, special educators, and support staff to meet student needs.
  • Participate in professional learning communities (PLCs), team meetings, and school-based initiatives.
  • Communicate effectively with families regarding student progress and classroom expectations.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development aligned with district goals and educator evaluation standards.
